Basically, when powered by a steady redstone current, this dispenser-like block would use any tool/item/block in its one inventory slot; if it had a tool, it would break the nearest block at the same rate as a player would with that tool (useful for things like automated cobblestone generators), and use durability on that tool (it could connect to a hopper, allowing it to replace the tool when it breaks). If it had an item with a "use" function, it would use that item (except food) (if it had a shield, it would block attacks/explosions from the direction it's facing, and display the shield). If it had a block, it would place the block in the direction it's facing (with the same reach as the player). It would look similar to the dispenser and the dropper, with a different-shaped mouth (obviously). This could turn out surprisingly useful.

This would be useful for automated things (actually, it could be useful for automated farms... if connected to a hopper... and the farm is set up so water would break all the seeds and crops, the stuff would go into the hopper, which would go into this redstone machine, which can hopefully place crops and seeds on the right type of block, which would place the seeds down again where it can reach) but it lacks ONE (can't think of anything else, so just one for now) main detail: How would you craft it? Also, can you maybe show me a picture of what the texture would look like? Because saying it looks like a dispenser/dropper just isn't enough for me. I will understand if you can't show pictures.
75% support until you say how to craft it (then I will probably give you full support 😆)

I don't have a solid idea for a texture yet, but I think crafting would be a dropper recipe except with a gold ingot (see attachment).
75% Support as well - this idea is cool but I think this degree of automation is more suitable for a mod...
Not really. It's about the same degree of automation as a dispenser; and even if a bit more, definitely less than a piston.
How comparators are going to work with that block?
It has a single slot, but there are still stack sizes and durability.
When the block is powered the comparator should have an output of full 15 by any means to stay consistent with other redstone mechanics.
But when unpowered I suggest it shows the approximate duration left on the used tool (if there is a tool inside)
I guess the GUI should display the durability when opened, and say N/A when there isn't a tool (displaying it on the block would not work, as Mojang would have to create a separate texture for each number).
This way you can test if the tool is going to break so you can replace it (with hoppers) (very helpful if you're using enchanted tools)
But than what percentages result to what redstone signal?
I think I now know what the texture would be. Basically like a dropper or dispenser, but instead of a small hole, it would have a large-ish square hole, with a tiny spot of gold at the center of the hole. The sides would look the same as that of the other two redstone machines that we already have in Minecraft.
It would definitely allow the infinite cobblestone generators to be completely automated. Or, with Silk touch tool and lava flowing on top of water "just the right way", infinite smooth Stone.
Would it allow nearly 100% automated crop farming? (without using brown villagers, I mean). Tree farming?
Given that it contains a slot, this means a block with metadata, which meas it can't be pushed by pistons. This makes it extremely limited for automatic block breaking.
Really not sure such a level of automation is desirable. Notch said he want to stay away from too much automation, but he's gone now, maybe Jeb feel more automation = better, who knows?
Honestly, with that amount of automation I'd rather we go full turtle: i.e. dedicated blocks that require a the 3 basic block-breaking tools to craft, but don't have any inventory slot at all. Then yeah you could build complex redstone slime blocks and pistons machines that are able to MOVE AROUND and thus with this block could break all blocks in their way muhahaha!

Pretty much all of the above points, I would love this and would definitely use it when I could.
I'm white. Not asian.
