I have a small idea. We all know that hoppers play a HUGE role in factories and farms, and I was pretty suprised to learn that you couldn't use them to farm the most important ingredient in Cake - Milk!
I propose that when a Cow is over a hopper at any given time, it collects a bucket of milk. However since we don't want your chests immediately flooded with what seems like endless buckets, instead buckets would be filled at about one every five minutes, which is plenty of time for you to go out mining, come back, and have yourself a nice cake. However, the trick for this to work is to have a stack of empty buckets already in the hopper to be filled - otherwise you get nothing.
I don't think that would work, unless you put something into the Hopper, in which it goes into the Dispenser instead. Hoppers are made to collect and carry items, not take them.
Nonetheless this is a pretty interesting suggestion with some potential, so long as it's balanced.
I think he was joking, because Mojang has tried to eliminate opportunities for automation before, like when they tried to make it so golems only dropped iron ingots if killed by a player. I think this was more Notch's thing though, rather than a Mojang in general thing.

Wut? Hoppers are, in fact, made to take things out of containers lmao. This would be simple to set up and it makes far more sense than Hoppers collecting milk.

The problem with the truth, is that it never lies.

It does? I thought it was just the one way. Oh well, thanks for clearing that up.
It sounds like a good idea but maybe not hoppers but dispensers instead?
You know put bucket in dispenser and power it and collects milk from cow.
The dispenser has limited storage and would require a hopper underneath if you wanted to immediately have the milk in a storage system. With a hopper it is less expensive and wouldn't require a middle medium to collect the milk.

Less expensive? Dispensers are not at all expensive..
Dispensers make more sense because you can pick up and put down lava/water.
So picking up or collecting milk would fit with it.

What do you guys think?

Dispensers can't give things to chests.
