The same process that creates a path, should be able to further 'lower' the path in the same size ratios as snow, with a minimum of the height of one snow cover.
Would make 'paths' more seamless for traversing height. Not requiring jumping.
Would be more aesthetically pleasing.
Would utilize the great, snow stacking feature in another facet of the game.
(Included the snow layers from Vanilla to help with visual reference.)
It would be a lot of wear on a shovel, but shovels are cheap. Support.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me, and when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
If the different layers weren't so similar, I'd support. Maybe if there were only four different layers...?
What would make this an easy add would be due to it's similarity to the layered snow. (See pictures) So mechanically and speaking from continuity, it would work.
Heck, even if you wanted a 1/4 step difference, ALT + click, possibly.
I think builders would love this. Personally, I wouldn't need it or use it, but that doesn't mean others wouldn't. Can you just explain a little more about how these would be obtained in survival? Because for snow, there's a crafting recipe with a few steps to get the slab-type things. And don't tell me it's in the reddit post, because it should be in this one too (and I'm too lazy to read the reddit post )

Even though my Join date is in 2014, I tried the demo on 8/30/2012, and bought the game two days later on 9/1/2012. So hipster

The reddit post is just the picture lol.
But you click the dirt and it lowers the dirt down more, like, reverse of the the way you stack snow, it lowers with each shovel click
I tried searching for a bit (searched paths, paths like snow, etc) and got nothing. Surprised this idea isn't here.
(Turns out this guy outlined the idea perfectly.)

Time to give picks competition for the premium tool of choice. Ha. But seriously my max EF & UB shovel only sees use for terraforming mostly.

I like it. It's simple, but would add a lot to path block roads.

I rather like this. It allows one to create gradually vertical paths without using stairs or snow. It has my support.

So, if you break one of the partially stacked ones it returns a dirt block? Might seem a little weird.
Yea I was thinking about that too. I think after the first dig or two it just vanishes like snow covers.
