Before you post, could you flesh out your idea with details, instead of the "I think it would be cool" approach? I've seen waaay too many of those lately, and they drive me up the wall.

i think it would be cool to be able to make custom paintings that can be seen by anyone on a server, without the need for a resource pack. I might like this in singleplayer too. like when you place a painting a chat msg will show up asking if want to use a custom painting or vanilla, and you can open chat and click [yes] or [no]. I don't want to have to deal with a /tellraw every time I put down a painting, especially if I'm trying to get a specific vanilla painting. Also, shouldn't the choices be [custom] or [vanilla]? The question given is not a yes or no question. clicking yes could open up a gui for an editor ingame, or config to open en external program and export import an image file. You wouldn't need to open an external program, just open the file explorer and pick your painting. i think allot of people would like this the majority wouldn't even bother with this since they're not artists and it would be a lot of work to look good, unless they used a picture by someone else and it could maybe have a detection system for servers to look for patterns and designs that are inappropriate for younger players it would be nice, but to have a system sophisticated enough to be effective, it would be incredibly difficult, and isn't exactly Mojang's area of expertise.

Overall, it wouldn't really be worth it for the amount of work required.
scorpionXR64, yes that is what i mean, well kind of, i ment like making a painting in-game that uses the same 16x or whatever resolution of the paintings and customizing it, like making a 2 block tall painting be a creeper instead of the normal textures
or changing the clay wither painting be the actual wither instead of the multi-block to spawn it

That is true, but what do you think of what I added on to this idea?
your idea is good but the paintings in minecraft are a resolution much lower than a .png off google, from what i know, minecraft's default textures for anything (i think) is 16x16 pixels, and some .png files are like 1080x1080 pixels resolution, so you would need to have the paintings support a resolution much greater than normal, other wise you would have to recreate to image in a resolution used by the painting you want to change the texture for.
i also know from experience that evan on a windows 10 laptop with optifine 1.8.9 that a 512x resource pack can lagg so that would cause some problems for people with a lower end pc, or on old pc, i would say optifine instal to all versions to solve the , but optifine 1.9 is glitchy at the moment so its not worth the time...
this thing with this idea is that we already can make custom paintings, but the method is slow and time consuming. you know, the map trick. it works nice but its annoying to make
no, i meant that you could open a gui ingame and edit the paintings, and optionally import an existing image file(this could evan be single player only).

Totally agree here.
While the approach described below is not my own favorite, it would still be much better and also very simple to implement because it wouldn't need any special GUI or new "painting design" items:
Paintings:
When you place a painting, the block you target is ALWAYS the lower left corner of the painting, and the painting is always the maximum possible size. When you want a smaller painting, you just place a torch or whatever to limit the painting size.
Roll Mouse Button 3 in order to cycle through all the paintings of the same size.
For each painting size, the game remembers the last painting you selected so that the next painting of that same size that you place will be the same one.
All the vanilla paintings image files would be in a specific resources folder. Say, resources/paintings/1by2/ would be for all pantings 1wide and 2 tall. You'd just have to add/remove/replace files in there and voilà, you'd get more (or less, or different) painting choices.
plz delete no one cares about custom paintings

Support. We should also be able to select PNG files from our computers and/or specify the size and possibly the shape of the painting. SUPPORT!
So if I read this correctly, it lets you be able to place down a painting and get an image from your files and make it as a painting?

whatever, nobody cares enough for this to be worth the time to be added into the game
