This is a great idea. I think that the Mojang staff should hold contests in the fan fiction section to see what gets put in story books. Also, I especially like the storage book.

Why not make a book called "the word of notch" with it crafted like
= apple and =book.
this will be an uploadable book that shows all of notch's posts. This is also, in a way, the minecraft bible (no offence if this offends you). dunno, its open to be edited. not sure about crafing recipie but it needs to be expensive.
I support this. I'll add the banner to my sig as soon as I figure out why it won't let me use img BBcode. >_>
Also I think the custom book recipe should be book + feather + ink sac. I have a suggestion for a new kind of book as well:
Book + Feather + bowl = Art Book
This book works like a custom book, except you can draw in it. By default, you don't have any colors. You have to add dye to a special GUI at the bottom of the canvas from your inventory (The dye will be consumed when the picture is done) to add color. You can only use 16 colors at a time (if Notch adds more). You can save your picture at any time and continue it later, and you can edit it as much as you like before finalizing it. Finalizing it allows you to give it a name, add notes about it in a text window, and store it in a bookshelf. (Obviously wet ink in a bookshelf is a very bad thing.) Being able to draw on-the-fly will make map creation easy, or making blueprints possible, or just painting that beautiful blocky landscape you see out your pixelated window when the sun sets.
Your dye is stuck in the book's GUI once you insert it, but you'll never have to insert more dye when you edit the book. You can even add dye as you obtain it. Basic functions of the GUI include small brush, medium brush, large brush, square brush (comes in three sizes, like the round brush), flood fill, eraser, eyedropper, zoom tool (magnifying glass), spray can (Yes, I know barely anyone uses the spray can in pixel art but it's still nice to have for doing lazy, half-assed clouds.), text tool (Different from the notes you can add in that the text is larger and you have less room), and stamp tool.
The stamp tool has a separate GUI where you can select premade shapes to paste into your picture with the color (dye) you're currently selecting. (Did I mention you click on the dye you want to use to paint with?)
Stamps include:
Star, Notch's head, Steve's head, apple, pickaxe, leaf block, creeper face (SSSSS-), pig face, torch graphic, fire graphic, book graphic, iron ore, gold ore, diamond ore, redstone ore, coal ore, wood block, mob spawner, water, lava, wood door, lever, redstone wire, heart, pork, wheat stalks, bedrock, Hellgate (Nether gate), fish, and sign.
All these stamps should make schematics for redstone devices and maps of your dauntingly expansive mine possible.
Alternatively you could use Book + Painting to create this, or perhaps a book of the different paintings in Minecraft. (That change with your texture pack.)
I agree that books need more use. Personally, I would like to see full player control over content as we have discussed in this thead.
<edit>I have written a summary of the thread I mentioned above for those who do not wish to read the entire thread. It's still a lengthy post though. This thread covers one of the open issues in that discussion, so please let's combine ideas and make a strong well thought out proposal and gather support.</edit>

Support the Allocator! Find my inventions such as my pressure plate removal detector on the About Me page of my profile.
I'm still looking for more feedback on my configurable Redstone Gate mod. All gates and common circuits (such as e.g. clocks, edge detectors, latches and Flip-Flops) in a single block.
Wow. You really thought this through, and I support it! But, the fluid book seems kind of usless beacause of the water book and I dislike the idea of spawning with a book in your inventory, it may add to the mystery but it steals away the idea of wilderness. The Book+item idea is awsome, but some books are a bit too relvealing about the game's mechanics.

I don't agree with the recipe, but the idea of the book itself is great.

All I want from books is to be able to write pages into them, write the book title on the spine of it, and be able to put them in/take them out of the bookshelf.
-Custom Books can be read outside of you inventory to allow you to carry around notes (when outside the inventory left click to read and right to edit)
-Basic Books can also be read outside of your inventory in the same manner as the Custom book (This is so beginners can easily learn of the craft bookshelves
I'm assuming that you mean this functions like this when having the book selected in your hotbar.
I disagree with this behaviour as it introduces a new game mechanic (left-click to read) which is inconsistent with how Minecraft currently functions (left-click: punch, right-click: use item).

Perhaps crafting a bookshelf should just put in some random books.

This is a great idea! But, you should have a book that tells more complicated things about TNT like a book+TNT+TNT or Book+TNT+Redstone. It could contain some ways to make a TNT cannon and how to make TNT traps. Like this:
Key:
= Book
= TNT
= Redstone
[] = Nothing

Wow, so many post in such little time, Thanks for the all you support!
Im currently pouring over the posts now and reading them all, I see some idea I like and will think about them
Books i support:
~~~~~~~~~~
Sea Book
Redstone Book
Monster Book
Animal Book
Dungeon Book
Nether Book
Fluid Book
~~~~~~~~~~
Books i think are just plain dumb:
~~~~~~~~~~
Tool Book
Seed Book
Crafting Book
~~~~~~~~~~
I absolutely love the idea about fictional stories. And some of the tutorials would be quite helpful. But if you don't know how to grow sugar cane, how would you make a book shelf in the first place?
But i digress. I think the idea of functional books is awesome, but some of your current tutorials are silly.
I like this idea, it would give a way for beginners to start if they are aware of the books :/
But I especially like the idea of custom books, I don't know why I just have always liked the thought of going on multiplayer, and finding a journal of some sorts that tells about someones journey to the house they made or something like that. Or walking into someones house and browsing through their library of collected books, maybe even server newspapers? The possibilities with this could be endless.
im pointing out that as of now books are stackable so they wouldnt be individual in your inventory. putting them in a shelf would separate them from being stackable

really cool i support your idea but to make bookshelfs have a use i suggest not being able to stack tutorial books and you couldnt store books in chests or something like that
i give you 6/5 dimonds for having a really great idea rofl im stupid its only 5 diamonds ha
