Me and a friend came to the same conclusion, left click should do left hand commands and right click should do right hand options. The way the latest snapshot handles it, it is switched. While I understand that as far back as Minecraft goes the control scheme was the same, but the dual wield changes things in such a massive way, I think you should at least include an option in the options to turn on this new control scheme.
My friend Scott and I have been playing Minecraft forever. Everyone I know who has tried the new snapshot says the same thing. It is confusing that the controls are switched around the way they are. I mean leave in the current control scheme as "default mode" or "classic mouse controls" but allow me the ability to change it over so that when I have something in my left hand, left click does that command, such as blocking with a shield, placing torches etc, and right click mines with the pickaxe, places blocks that are in that hand etc...
I would like your input on this issue. I understand that some of you like things the way they are which, sure leave the swapped mouse buttons as default for classic control scheme, and allow those of us who want a more sane control scheme to be put in place. I think you could even make middle click like the scroll wheel do something as I don't even think they sell mouses without a scroll wheel that clicks anymore.
tl;dr include an option that left click should do left handed or shield slot things, and right click should do normal commands for everything else now.
I think they could let you change it to either:
1: No dual weilding
2: what you said
or 3: How the duel weilding is now.
I dislike the dual wielding scheme as well, but it looks like they are dedicated to it, so instead of complaining about it and being negative, I offered a solution to the problem that I feel most can agree with. You can always not use the slot to not dual wield, ignoring the fact it even exists which I feel most players will end up doing, and like cogs, will probably get removed later. I think that with better controls it has a chance of surviving the long haul.
Where do I find said magical option? Such a thing would be the bees knees.

Thanks this is probably what I will end up doing, but it doesn't completely do the idea I want. I don't want it to change the entire scheme, only when dual wielding another item, otherwise things stay the same. But thank you so very much, this makes things make a ton more sense while playing the new update.

I do believe you can change your main hand from the right side to the left side. It won't mess up your controls, it would be only an aesthetic change.

Which is a wonderful idea. It worked to an acceptable extent in what I want. My idea was further complicated than this though, and only applied while wielding something in the left hand.
Ok so after work I came home and swapped mouse buttons, and after I got used to it, going back to 1.8 was a bit of a letdown. I love having a stack of torches in my left hand (now left mouse button, previously right) and used the pickaxe with my right button and it was beautiful.
However, things are apparent when not dual wielding that the controls need to switch back. Meaning that my idea still has merit (at least to me). I wish the controls were smarter like that is all I ask. Like they should know when I have something to use with my other hand, that is the control I meant to use, and when I only have a shield in the hand, nothing happens, and my mining is back to the normal scheme.
I can see how such a thing could be confusing , and after official release I might make a mod called "smart mouse controls". The code would be very very simple. Here I will even post the code.
EDIT: Code tools suck when editing code to fix errors on this forum. Please fix.

Thank you for your opinion.
