With 1.9 coming and spam clicking going away, why not implement a dodge mechanic with the new pvp system. Not only that, but take into consideration the armor a player is wearing, lighter armor (or no armor at all) should give a faster or farther dodge distance. Perhaps its could work like if you tap the sprint button while walking/running in a direction it dodges. I'm sure this would balance out the pvp system as well as pve, being able to dodge out of the way of arrows or creeper explosions would really be useful.
I think this is actually a good idea. How about another balancing addition: Every time you dodge, you lose 1/2-1 hunger bar and can only do it after a recharge.
Can be quite useful, especially how this would have an effect on the type of armour you are wearing. With the spam-clicking now removed, this would definitely help and would even open up to new skills.
Though for some reason, I feel as though it should be given another use, as of right now, this mechanic seems limited to PVP, but maybe that's just me.
What if there was some invincibility frames during the dodge? The invincibility frames could be for the first half of the dodge only.
Sneaking and then sprinting would make you dodge backwards by default or if moving forward, and moving to the side will make you dodge in that direction. A good player would react to a dodge and time their attack until after the invincibility frames end, while an even better player would make their dodges unpredictable to avoid that. Possibly have dodges count be affected and affect the attack cooldown, meaning the duration and distance would be decreased by how full the bar is, as well as resetting the bar.

Well, for pve its mainly to dodge skeleton arrows or dodge away from creepers, or let's say you realized there's a hole in front of you that you don't realized, while yes its main use is in combat or when you made a mistake while mining I do feel its still useful for both

SURPRISE!!!!
Oh great, now I have to get a new computer.
As annoyed as I am with the new PVP function, I think that this would be an awesome idea to go with it! Support!
I love this idea, support.
Nice addition to PVP and PVE.

Would give a point to wearing leather and chain amor, plus it would create new dynamics in PvP.

While walking? I start running. While running? I keep my finger on Shift. (I use it as sprint.)
Just walk to the side.
Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
It would just use the sneak key, not Shift regardless.
