Notch should implement magnetite.
When you get a magnetite clump ( Looks like coal but with white specks ) and smelt it, you get a magnetite block. The North pole would face the player best it could, even in up / down direction placement. It would have similar physics of sand, like falling. It only works by being activated by a mechanism. You could place a North-up magnetite block somewhere, with a North-down block on top of it. Get on top of the North-down block and on the wall, place a lever. Click the lever, and you will be propelled up.
I had an idea like this once, gravity field generator.
The Gravity field generator, it toggles between pushing and pulling. It causes things to fall up down left right. Not limited to another block of the same kind, but things can already have physics, sand, gravel, carts, and you. Combined in sequence (limited by distance), could make an interesting elevator. Powered by redstone, very useful.
But your idea is much simpler, I like it a great deal. Even if the utility is more limited.

Unfortunately, riding a block I would consider dangerous, as if you run into blocks you suffocate. So the initial idea is good, but needs some refining to be made useful.

Thanks :biggrin.gif:
And all of you, for providing awesome replies, earn holy beards of Notchness.
