Hey guys, so recently I've been playing Minecraft and found there is not really a lot you can do about minor falling damage. (4+ Blocks). And I was thinking about a new mechanic that would work as sort of a tuck and roll.
Here's how it would work:
1. The falling distance must be more than 4 blocks but less than 6
2. Timing must be just as landing on block
3. Control: [SHIFT]
Let me know what you guys think! This is a very rough idea right now and I understand how some players might feel it ruins the integrity of water buckets and such, but with the fact that you can't fall a very large distance with this mechanic, water buckets will still come into play fairly often.

This isn't really effective, mostly because of the falling limitations. Falling at 4-6 blocks is nothing, taking only around 1-4 heart points in the process. The Tuck and Roll won't really be helpful whether you use it or not. Either way, it's pointless to have because at this type of height, it's not effective and not needed.

Actually, that's incorrect. The small amount of fall damage can actually be an extremely significant part of PvP, since it's more or less a DPS rush. Being able to avoid small amounts of fall damage on reaction would increase the skill ceiling of PvP greatly. Like it or not, PvP servers are very popular because of the dynamic combat that you won't get from mobs, and improving it would be worth it both from a business perspective and Mojang's perspective, especially with them focusing on combat changes currently.
No offense or rudeness intended, but I think you should reconsider posting on threads about some topics. You may be a good critic, but I don't believe that any one person can understand everything a game. I really do not intend to judge you, but I just feel like you don't perform as well sometimes. You're a better critic than me, and although I do not agree with all of your methods, I think that your methods are just as viable as mine. To put it in more blunt words; I don't think you should post in every topic, because you don't seem like an overanalyzing hardcore PvP enthusiast. (Ironically, I dislike actually doing PvP, but I love analyzing it ;-;) By the way, may I remind you that you're so important to me, I spent more time giving you criticism and advice than countering your criticism c: That means something. I think so, at least. I'm going to put this in small text so it doesn't look at big, kk?

@Endergirl00: I respect your point, but at times this could be very helpful. In example: Poison from witches and needing to get away from mobs, but you cant run away because if you fall that tiny fall you will die. Or any low life situation. Also, the reason I made it for such small heights is because I didn't want to completely ruin the integrity of the game, (water buckets) and for realistic reasons. No one is going to jump off of a 40+ block cliff and survive by a simple tuck and roll, I just didn't want it to be too op so that the feather falling enchantment still had it's uses. But thank you for the honest criticism it is appreciated
@ExplorerEze Thanks for the feedback!
@Shaddura Thank you very much for the appreciation and you make a very good point. I didn't really think about PvP, but this would dramatically effect some battles, imagine being on low health and knocked off of a bridge, and then pulling off the clutch tuck and roll and managing the escape! Epic!
All in all like I said I didn't expect everybody to love my idea, but I hadn't seen anything else posted on this so I thought it was worth a shot

I could maybe be on board for a way to "brace" yourself only on short falls, though a "tuck-and-roll" doesn't seem very Minecraftish... I agree it's annoying when you got a little bit of health left and you die from that 4 block fall. Not sure if I support or not.

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.

I imagine the tuck-and-roll is more of a name than anything. Although yes, thinking about it, a roll sounds nothing like Minecraft.
I can't really think of anything though, maybe "Steady Landing"? I can see this being a huge thing in competitive PvP though. It could be interesting if you were unable to move during the 0.5 second invulnerability you get after taking fall damage, as another incentive to use the Steady Landing feature. That would add a whole new level of strategy when it comes to combat near ledges, since falling could get you stunned if you don't use a steady landing.

@Cerroz: Yes, tuck and roll really is more of a name than anything, I wasn't really wanting a tuck and roll animation. That would be a very weird sight to see in a game with such simple animations d:
@ Shaddurah: I like the "Steady Landing" name mentioned!
@SebjimPlaysMC: I'm not really sure what you mean? I explained the basic mechanics of it, I'm not really sure how to explain it further. Please elaborate?

Oh, it's a term used in parkour, basically, upon landing off of a large jump, a person tucks in their body and rolls across their shouders to evenly distribute the impact force across their whole body, rather than landing on their feet and breaking their ankles.

OHHHHHHHH I get it. Thanks for explaining I probably seem pretty stupid. Maybe not tucking and rolling, but simply just pressing shift to reduce fall damage. 80% Support!

I've been playing since May 2011,when PC was at Beta 1.6. Started on PE: 0.3.0, XBOX 360: TU4, PC: 1.4.7, and Windows 10: 0.12.
I think that this would actually be a big difference in combat servers and the like, and a fairly useful skill for more experienced players to have at their disposal. However I'd rather see something like crouching on impact than tucking and rolling. Crouching when you hit the ground is a real life method to prevent injury from a fall, and in real life you have to time it right when you hit the ground, which would translate perfectly into how it would be used in the game, (since shift is already crouch, and this would have to be timed right). I also agree with having it only work for a certain height range, otherwise it would be too overpowered.

This little mechanic would probably turn out to be, whether in PvP or normal survival, pretty useful. I like how you kept it balanced by having the range of 4-6 blocks.

Please just don't post if you don't have anything to add to the discussion/suggestion.
Adding on to what Shaddy here said, please don't post just yes or no because this forum aren't about just gathering support for an idea, it's actually more about generating discussion. If all you have to say is yes or no it's best to do nothing but vote on a poll. If there isn't one, either think of something to generate discussion, or refrain from posting. It's not that we don't value your opinion, it's just not the point of this forum. Thanks
