I am just suggesting that minecraft should be for steam, this would be easier for players that use steam only to get it,I have already MC and wouldn't need a steam one but just suggesting that it would be better that MC would get a steam version.
Why steam?
Steam already has lots and lots of games and is really popular. If MC would get a steam version it would get more popularity.
Would this bring a downside?
It would not bring a downside but what it does to nothing related to games it does alert you constantly about new offers and updates.

That was it,nothing more to this suggestion.
The only thing that would benefit me personally with Minecraft being on Steam is support for the overlay, but even then I don't play much in fullscreen, and that's one benefit among a couple hindrances.
Firstly, Mojang has their own open platform to work with the game on. They get to choose how the game and launcher work together and how to release new content. With Steam you have to use their own launcher platform unless you only distribute the game through Steam and use a custom launcher for it, which is pointless in my eyes.
Secondly, because the game has it's own launcher, you can access entirely separate installations from one location that each operate separately from each other. On Steam games you can't have 3 different installs of the same game, each with their own set of saves and additional content. All saves and content are only accessible through one. Mods are for one installation of the game, you cannot have 3 different installs with entirely separate sets of mods with Steam games, whereas this is a big reason why Mojang added profiles to the launcher.
No support for the general gist of your suggestion, the only thing I support a little bit is the Steam overlay, otherwise, I don't see the point to it and as already mentioned it'll kill 2 big advantages of having a custom platform to launch the game from.

I'm pretty sure that you can access the steam overlay already when you add Minecraft to Steam, but it requires a workaround.
Workaround. And I'm sure you can't as you'd need to run the game itself through Steam to use the overlay (to my knowledge), and Minecraft requires the launcher to run. You cannot run the launcher through Steam and have the game have the overlay.

I just looked it up and tried it, you can run javaw.exe through steam and use arguments to make it launch the launcher. You need the .jar version of the launcher though. It works in the launcher and in the game.Don't use it in the launcher though, you can't close it.
check this out!
Steam would make money off of this, lowering Mojang's already shared income with Microsoft. That's the downside.
Inactive account. See Bio.

Minecraft isn't 'small', and it's community isn't 'small' either. I also don't think that there's a real reason to put it there.
No Support, sorry
