So, the criticism for this idea was a few things: it's gross, and people don't have that much leather in large amounts. Both of these are no longer valid due to the new bone blocks. Bone blocks are extremely creepy and not viable if it wasn't for auto-farms. It's also the block people were most excited about in 1.10. So, I'm thinking we should revisit the idea. It really would enhance several builds to have a dyeable block that is actually vibrant, unlike clay. Not to mention the uses for undyed leather blocks in Western-style builds.
I rather like this idea, not sure why everyone is calling it weird, or unrealistic. For those saying it is unrealistic, dyed leather is an actual thing within the real world, and it is commonly used for decorative purposes, as for it being a solid block of leather, it doesn't have to be solid, just like the hay block, it's not a literal compressed block of wheat. As for the "weirdness" of it, leather is a common decorative material used throughout the world. Even within the game, leather is used in similar circumstances, leather item frames are a common decorative item, and leather armor is the only decorative armor set. This makes me question what you all think of leather armor, that would surely be worse, as you're wearing "The flesh of the cows I've killed, and then dyed in a rainbow pattern". This idea is perfectly reasonable within the scope of the game, and is much more normal then some of the other suggestions, or features within the game. This idea has my support
Exactly what Darkhax said. Support. Maybe you can uncolor a dyed leather block by putting it in a cauldron (like leather armor) so the leather block doesn't lose its property of being able to be changed back into leather.
Like I said before, support. I like the idea. Just the little add on I stated would change my support to full support
- It's a bit morbid, having a block made out of an animals skin...
- We already have dye-able blocks, such as clay and wool, which it's too similar as, too.
1. We have bone blocks already. Why should leather blocks be any worse.
2. Saying we have wool and clay is like saying "we have oak, so let's remove spruce and birch and acacia!" Wool is too grainy to be used; clay colors are tinted red. Texture changes won't help either; wool is perfect for what it is supposed to be, and clay has its own aesthetic going on. We need cyan and purple and black colors in a way that can fit with builds.
"1. We have bone blocks already. Why should leather blocks be any worse."
Bone Blocks are mainly used in giant generated fossils, which warrants them nicely. And a lump of Leather, in my opinion, is much more grotesque than Bone Blocks.
"2. Saying we have wool and clay is like saying "we have oak, so let's remove spruce and birch and acacia!""
But it's not because Spruce, Birch, and Acacia have differing textures, whereas Leather, I imagine, would be too similar to clay in texture. A bit of red tint doesn't make much difference, and if that bugs us that much, we can always propose removing the slight red tint. Let's not clutter the options with 1000 coloured stuff.

Because bone blocks are solid, not fleshy.

I get that you can have your own opinion, but consider this: We use leather in the seats of most cars nowadays. Native American Teepees were made from animal hide. It's morbid because it's a cubic meter, but that's just how Minecraft works. Everything is a cubic meter.

Yeah and who is to necessarily say these are just a straight cubic meter of leather? Why couldn't it just be leather hides sewn together and stretched/shaped into a cube and be hollow? Rigid hardened leather is absolutely a thing that exists and it is fairly good at remaining in a shape.
There isn't anything gross about this. It isn't any more gross than taming and tying up a Llama, putting a chest on their back, then killing a thousand more and making it carry the hides of its entire family and herd into a TNT minefield. And we can already totally do that.

As much I love stacking many items into blocks for condensed storage... I'm not feeling blocks of leather.
Only because there's no real use of leather past your first enchanting room. I have 1-6 stacks usually in my world.
I'd say, I kinda like the idea purely for condensed storage, but over all - not a fan.

Because bone blocks are solid, not fleshy.
Perhaps, but this isn't necessarily the best way.

If this block was a layered textured, like how real world pelts, leather, and other cloths or soft materials, I would feel better about this idea.
Although, I don't know of any chances of using leather for construction.
IRL, were little huts built using leather?
