I remember Dinnerbone tweeting about adding treasure maps. I'm actually thinking there could be two types added for serious treasure hunters.
1. "X marks the spot type." This type can best be illustrated by how they work in Twilight Forest and Antique Atlas. In these mods certain maps can show you structures of interest. Typically most structures contain treasure, but even if some do not it would still encourage trying. The Twilight Forest's Magic Map shows a zoomed out view of the general area and can even locate underground structures. It has special icons for different ones so you can choose which to visit first. The Maze Map shows a very zoomed in view of the local area withing a very narrow height window. This helps with navigating structures like mazes. MarcIRL may run into these maps while playing Magicraft because Twilight Forest is in the pack. Something similar to these could be created by players. It would sort of be like crafting a clue. Since Dungeons are getting harder to find crafting these would be a fair trade off to locate them. A blank Map surrounded by Gold Nuggets seems fair enough.
2. "Scavenger hunt type." This is very different from just searching for a buried chest. In Plunder Rummage and Wildycraft you could get this type as rare drops from enemies. Follow all the clues and find your treasure. With Wildycraft the Clue Scroll was more diverse with the clues while Plunder Rummage always followed locations using its Treasure Map. When it came to treasure awarded Plunder Rummage offers potentially more chests until you find the final one, while Wildycraft gives one big payoff. The types of treasure available is also very different. Plunder Rummage has the edge with unique rewards like the Enchantment Siphon, which allows you to transfer enchantments from items onto books (which is also something Dinnerbone has hinted at) and a version of an Uncrafting Table for recycling things. How you receive your chests is unique with Wildycraft. When you fulfill the last clue it transforms the block under you into a loot chest.
I can see the first type fitting in almost as in the mod, but the second type could use the best of both with a little extra twist. For a scavenger hunt type you could use all sorts of clues (like Wildycraft) and get your treasure by having the item transform into a special chest. This chest would have all the treasure data already attached. As soon as you place it you could retrieve your earned treasures, but then it would just be a normal chest afterward. The treasures themselves should include unique treasures as well as more usual ones. Going for the exclusive items would give players a good reason to use them and could be an easy way to introduce items into the game that are truly special. I think having these types of treasure maps could be rare drops or treasure catches from fishing. Perhaps a Testificate Clerk (Librarian) could sell you one for the right price?

Responses in bold,
I found certain aspects of this vague, but overall this sounds like a fun activity for minecraft.
some item suggestions include Poseidon's pole (or fisherman's pole, I'm one for Greek mythology) this would be a renamed fishing poll with lure 5 on it,
the Zombane (I'm also one for puns) a stone sword with smite 5 on it, magic ring, a gold nugget that doubles your speed and jump height and increases damage by one when your holding it, Scythe, an iron hoe with 4.5 attack damage, and of course this is just custom stuff other things that could be found are emeralds, gold, diamonds, golden apples, dirt(trololol), and a 0.01-1% chance for a holy notch apple (it depends on how rare the maps are)
a good, fun idea

Thanks! I'll edit in some more. I was wondering first how the initial idea would go and I'll polish it more over time as well. Part of this is seeing what people want in them without being too overpowered or too far from Vanilla. I'd like to see this balance well with the game in the end while still being a fun reason to explore to get more loot. I prefer going renewable if at all possible. How about surrounding a blank Map with Gold Nuggets for a "Treasure Seeker's Map?" I also appreciate your love of mythology and name puns! Been a while since I've seen someone who shares my style! Dinnerbone also said he wanted to eventually add findable loot with unique enchants and other unusual buffs. I like the idea of the Lure 5 Fishing Pole. It would give this more of an aquatic vibe and the oceans could still use a bit more love.

you know, it might help if you put a link in your signature(were you put your banners) that's what I did
That reminds me: Whats a good site for custom banner design? I edited the main post's spacing a bit. I'm pondering if it would be a good idea to let "Scavenger Hunt Maps" be a rare drop from all hostile mobs, but with a 0% base rate. This would mean they would only drop off hostile mobs if you used some degree of Looting. Is that a bit too rare or does it give it a reasonable limitation against early exploits? Let's say one of the treasures for this type of map was a helmet that granted constant Night Vision (another of Dinnerbone's ideas) and you got that on your first day. Would that be too early?

well I noticed this in a signature. haven't used it though
also, that is a good point, but depending on how rare they are, this may not be a requirement,
it gives you 1extra heart, haves the knockback you take, doubles your speed, and adds 1 damage to your punches(because rings hurt)
Nice command code! I wonder if this is how they make those awesome "Only One Commands?" I'll check into the banner maker soon and give it a try as well.

yeah, trust me, you need more than a generator to make the more advanced stuff
Those two are legends now. Even SethBling is impressed!
yea think? reds made ridable drones, hover boards, 2 bosses, Mario mechanics, and even a command block powered survival map, while IJ's made cars, a custom dungeon generator, 2 furniture mods, And 2 lucky block mods. jragon 014, and the minecraft avatar, are good coders, and accidental game's sparks does some good survival ones, and has done the most advanced module yet! custom terrain generation.

I made the magic ring with this command generator.(also added a movie reference)
/give @p gold_nugget 1 0 {display:{Name:"Magic ring",Lore:["My precious "]},AttributeModifiers:[{AttributeName:"generic.maxHealth",Name:"generic.maxHealth",Amount:2,Operation:0,UUIDMost:32638,UUIDLeast:522973},{AttributeName:"generic.knockbackResistance",Name:"generic.knockbackResistance",Amount:0.5,Operation:0,UUIDMost:61482,UUIDLeast:560040},{AttributeName:"generic.movementSpeed",Name:"generic.movementSpeed",Amount:1,Operation:1,UUIDMost:10382,UUIDLeast:15128},{AttributeName:"generic.attackDamage",Name:"generic.attackDamage",Amount:1,Operation:0,UUIDMost:90383,UUIDLeast:800907}]}
