Great idea for the grates. I also have an idea, Lava should pass through all grates, but when passing through iron grates, they ''melt'' after 10 seconds. Ceramic grates wouldn't melt, but crumble after 30 seconds from the heat/pressure causing the inner parts of it to expand and the outer parts to shrink. Obsidian grates would treat lava the same as water, and the mining rate would be half of that of obsidian. And when blasted by explosives, they have a high blast resistance, but if too close to TNT (1 block away from it) they always fall as a dropped item, not a 50/50 chance as with other blocks.
Eh?
And, grates should accept 2 or less streams of liquid flowing into them (2 blocks adjacent to the space above the top) but if it reaches 3 or more blocks, the 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc., the 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc. would be ignored and flood as usual. Using more grates in a spot would increase how much it can handle, ex. 1 grate accepts 2 streams, 1x2 area of grates accepts 4, 2x2 accepts 8, etc. which should be easy to implement as no additional code is needed for grates next to grates. But it should be noted that a grate 1 block away from a grate with a stream overflowing one, and flowing towards another overflowing grate adjacent to the grate may cause the game to crash if it's not coded properly. But, don't doubt the ones who have brought Minecraft this far,..
Segfaulter, we can carry lava in an iron bucket, I don't think grates should melt. Why would you use grates with lava anyway? Items burn up in it and it's not even transparent to see the grates. Basically, you wouldn't achieve anything with grates and lava.
The only thing I could think of is for standing on grates with lava in them. Would look really cool, but it's obviously not a good idea to die on them.

How about there being two kinds of grates? One can allow items to fall through and another could stop items from going through. Kinda like a sewage grate. It keeps unwanted things out of the sewage system. Or a the grates could be red stone. Iron grates could be black when items pass through and red when items can't. Ceramic grates could be brown when items can pass through and blue when items can't. Is this a good idea?
