Make a semi-automated obsidian factory, easier to clean up after yosefl. You win.
since when has it been possible to make an obsidian factory?
Grates would allow flow blocks to pass through, not source blocks. and since obsidian needs a sourceblock of lava, and you are in no way multiplying the source blocks of lava, all you acutally have is a cobblestone factory.
only way (that I know of) to "Farm" Obsidian, is making many nethergates and destroying old ones.
1 Nethergate = 1 Nethergate back. Therefore, you spend 10 blocks, and get 10/12 extra. (not sure if the exit* is a copy or a full gate)
this was OT, but was bugging me, sorry :/

I've been wondering about this, clay... first off, I've never seen or obtained clay, so it seems to me a lot rarer than Iron, as I've posted Iron being ridiculously common if your trying. having the 2 would make the construction of grates easier as there are more than 1 option, and would also allow greater aesthetic design.
I glanced over the creation boards, but what was your idea on clay grates? same as iron bars, but clay bars instead? (just curious)
second point: I don't think making a 'translucent' block opaque to mobs would be logical. I totally understand you not wanting to get shot and all, but if arrows the items can go through, and blocks the items can go through, then surely a flying small cylindrical object should surely be able to pass through yes? This would also allow YOU to shoot at creepers, spiders, zombies, ghasts, zombie pigmen, farm animals and the rest being safe (I dont see how flying fireballs are small enough to go through grates from Ghasts imo) in a safe and secure fashion.
Also, Falling blocks are not solid persay, I think sand and gravel should break apart when they fall "THROUGH" a grate just like they break down when they fall on a torch. If you drop a bag of sand or gravel onto a grate and the bag tears, you're gonna lose some of your gravel and sand. (This could be implemented with the exception that there needs to be a space under the grate for it to work, unlike torches which disentegrates sand and gravel if they fall on it.) This shouldn't be a problem, seeing as how sand or gravel normally falling on it (this is improbable anyway) would only block the water from flowing through the grates, there would be no flooding or anything dangerous, only water would not pass by anymore. so why not?
Thanks to good O'l Notch making Clay a very hard to distinguish color, i had to go and edit the texture for it to make it stand out. But Clay is EVERYWHERE.... around large bodies of water anyway. I have quite a lot of clay just from around the first island i started on, but haven't had any use for it since i build with mostly cobblestone :tongue.gif:
Oh and sorry, i'll need to clarify them being made out of clay Bricks and not clay. Thanks for pointing that out.
LOL oddly enough my reasoning to back up the concept of the grates not being able to be shot through, is that you can't shoot through fences. But that's all i have to support that lmao. Um... hmm, I donno really.. i guess id have to be able to play around with them in game to really see if id like that or not. Since my original idea for grates was really to just have them as a flooring in a trap, not walls or something to shoot through. But the idea of them has evolved this far. All i know is, id sure hate to go walking by a trap and get shot in the head.. heart attack waiting to happen >.< BUT if Minecraft actually followed realistic standards, then id have to say yes. *nods*
GREAT POINT ABOUT FALLING BLOCKS! I don't know why i didn't think about this o.o
Falling blocks hitting grates get turned into item form and fall through. Gonna add this to the OP!
thanks again Xuro :biggrin.gif:

First off, I like the idea. My interpretation of this is:
A grate is a half block that allows liquids/items to flow through from the top-down, not side-to-side (although that is probably the opposite how you wanted it, Minecraft logic brought me to that conclusion). Crafting 2 grates would make a grate block, which allows water to flow through all directions. Adding a redstone circuit to the mix would open or close the grate. The primary use is with iron, but you can also use clay.
My input:
There should be a difference between using ceramic and iron grates. I was thinking iron could work with redstone, and ceramic grates... can be cheaper to make (the crafting output is double the amount half-grates or something). I don't really see how electricity can affect ceramic (but then again, it works with wood doors). That way everyone is happy (the less cost-effective but innovative iron grate, and the less creative but cheap ceramic).
And just to clarify, do you use clay or clay bricks (clay+furnace)?
Sorry sorry, clay Bricks >.< *is working on changing the OP*
I don't really wish to over complicate these too terribly much. Ceramic Grates are basically a second option to crafting, and to allow a choice in styling. Im still a bit iffy on using the redstone idea.. but it makes sense. Also, it helps ease the work on whoever the poor guy is who has to code them, if these get implemented xD
however, like i've said, Its ultimately up to Notch n' Team to work that out =]

The idea of grates is very interesting! But how about wooden grates? It would be a cheap, but makes for an effective way to make grates early on (kind of). But they wouldn't be able to survive fires and lava (of course). So they're not as hard to make as ceramic grates (clay is a pain to find) or costly as iron (precioussss).
Also, it would be interesting if the grates could be horizontal or vertical. So you might have a grate in the ceiling/floor or the wall? I can't help but think it would be better if the grate was like the half-slab but in the middle instead of the top.
I imagine seeing a wooden grate and thinking it was a window... then wounder why there's a window on the floor.
Probably a good idea for crafting windows out of wood if glass isn't available or for cosmetic reasons, but you can edit the glass texture to look like windows. *shrugs* Also, having wooden grates, and them being able to be destroyed by lava, leads me back to over complication. *shakes head* might be a bit much don't you think?
As for placement:
Quote from raiu_tree »
I like the grate being a top of the block thing, taking only about 2 pixels (as for collision detection from underneith, the block would still be empty (ie, you can fit in it) but it would act like a solid block is above you.
as for grates on the walls, you can use a full grate block for that, cant you?
=D thats how i imagine it.
MechaMage,
Quote from MechaMage »
But for aesthetics, one may not WANT to use a full block in their walls.
And as for the magic reddy:
Want it basic?
Don't wire it up, leave it as it is. Fluids flow through, you build epic platforms halfway through a waterfall, to take a nice shower, or you make a cool-ass bridge across lava that doesn't impede flow. Much easier to use your farm, because you don't have to mess with floating slabs. You win.
Wire it up. Off state become closed, on becomes open. Variable dams, death traps, all that shiz. Create drydocks for your ships. Make a semi-automated obsidian factory, easier to clean up after yosefl. You win.
Everyone wins. Except for the poor mobs you trap with your mad skillz, you creul redstoner, may you get redstoned to death.
OMG I DIDN'T THINK ABOUT SHIPPING YARD IDEAS!!!! .... so many.. many.. broken boats >.<;;;;;;
You could just slide your boat in on top of the grates after a day at sea, and climb out without worrying about breaking it! DUDE!!!! Ok, now we so need to get Notch's attention with this idea, like... right now right now. Anyone have his phone number?? Call him lmao
this is so going on the OP... thank you MechaMage, you've made me want to really push this idea into overdrive!
k, wait, how is ths able to make dams/ shipyards effectively, when on, water flows past the block, hits the ground and moves out 7 spaces. Are these small shipdocks? anything beyond a diameter of 14 will have completely dry spots in the middle. not making for a very large ship docking area :sad.gif: are you making 'shipyards' for toddlers? :tongue.gif:
Unless you have some sort of source block replicating on the otherside, but that would make obsidian farms possible. (not that it has much of a use anyway :sad.gif: )
someone please clear this up....

not to sure about the obsidian factories, nor am i really concerned about getting the stuff since its easier for me to bucket up lava and cool the source blocks in a mold, rather then breaking the stuff with a diamond pickaxe. BUT if MechaMage can explain further, or show a diagram.. id so make an obsidian forge just for the fun in it =D
As for grate shipping yards:
where = you + in a boat
and = water flowing into a grate
you can just slide in, and the grate acting like any solid block involving a boat will act like a break, and hold the boat in place. And all you have to do to head back to sea, is turn around and push it back into the water, right click it just before it takes off on its own ^^
as for dams, im sure you could make any damn just out of any solid blocks, then removing the water from one side by filling it in with dirt or something then digging it out. BUT for really BIG realistic looking dams that let out water from one side to another .. i can see it working something like this:
Thanks to good O'l Notch making Clay a very hard to distinguish color, i had to go and edit the texture for it to make it stand out. But Clay is EVERYWHERE.... around large bodies of water anyway.
yeah, i used to have such a hard time finding clay, but after switching my clay texture to a reddish mud-like texture (and going to post-halloween update chunks), i've found so much that i was able to carpet many of my buildings with it.
oh, also, something i've seen on some suggestion topics is they put the code for the banner on the OP, like so:
(dont need to though. glad you like it, took me all of a minute to make ;P (also, if you put the code like so, people can click directly on the pick to be directed to the topic)
@Xuro: not really shipyards, persay, but more of small dock for just a boat or two at a time.
I can just imagine it now, a 2nd teir dungeon with mossy cobble walls and grate floors! </artistic spasms>
if there is one thing i'd like to suggest, i think the crafting should be changed a smidge:
= half grate (is that what we're calling the kind that is at the top of a block?)
(two half grates still make a full grate)
[]
[] [] ⇒ x3 (assuming iron grates can use redstone)
[]
which would lead to 3.3 iron per full grate, is that too expensive?
and then for ceramic (which i'm assuming do not take redstone input? I think that's logical), maybe four? i'm not certain... input?
edit: ninja'd about the docks; oh well :tongue.gif:

does this really work?
The crafting thats up on the OP is merely a suggestion, it'll be up to Notch n' Team to decide on it.
As for the redstone workings.. for the sake of simplicity, im just thinking all the grates will work with it.
This has gotten pretty far. I really hope to see this in a mod or even an update. (damn notch won't update for another 2 weeks. )
Hey, even Notch deserves a break every now and then. Perhaps the rest of the crew has done some stuff to the main game aswell and are posting it when he returns??? *fingers crossed*

so far it's six for six :biggrin.gif:
question about mechanics however...
what would happen if a lava and a water meet within a grate block? I would say the best solution would be only the one there first would continue to go first, however, I am a small bit of a programmer, and i know that that would be hell to code, so i think the better solution would be, for example:
1) ⇨⇦
2)
3)
the only other option i can think of would be to say that only the fluid with the closer sourse (stronger flow) would get to continue

realistically thinking, that would clog the grate with cobblestone. So i imagine it destroying the grate entirely, and only leaving the cobblestone.
