I'm pretty impartial to this. I think the nether does need something more to keep you there a little bit longer, I'm just not sure this is it. Its a nice idea, though.
I really just wanted to let you know that Brimstone is actually the alchemic name for Sulfur, which is more often a gas, or a very weak solid. Just thought you should know that.
This material has some potential. But I feel as though the weapon and arrow for it is pretty redundant seeing that we already have the Fire Aspect and Flame Enchantment. And since it's weaker than Iron, anyone would preferably choose Iron with a Fire Aspect enchantment over a Brimstone enchantment. What got me interested was the pickaxe, everything else was quite generally suggested and quite unoriginal. But the ore itself has something about it that would be more exceptional.
why would you use it anyway? you need to have diamond to go to the nether
Who said you would need diamond to go to nether? I can enter the Nether with near-broken leather armour and an iron sword and return with two stacks of Nether Rack, a stack of quartz, 4 ghast tears, and 7 magma creams.
I used Iron as an example because it was quite weaker than diamond, so proving that comparing a generally used item (such as iron) and comparing it to the suggestion (such as this) is a lot more efficient than saying diamond or other powerful materials or items.
before I begin I am aware some hints have been made but no specifications were set so here is my attempt.
brimstone: found anywhere in the nether, spawns more frequently near lava.
brimstone ore must be smelted in a furnace.
Crafts-
Brimstone shortsword/knife (inflicts slight fire damage)
1 brimstone + 1 blaze rod
damage slightly less than iron sword
durability between wood and stone
Brimstone Arrow (provided that there isn't a fire arrow in 1.9 update) (inflicts slight fire damage)
1 brimstone + blaze powder + feather
damage slightly better than a regular arrow
flight range is short due to heavier material
brimstone pickaxe (small chance to automatically smelt any other ore)
2 brimstone + blaze powder + 2 blaze rods
mining speed is better than iron
durability same as wooden pickaxe or less
damage is better than stone (slight fire damage)
this is just a base concept but could be easily molded into something more, as introducing a nether exclusive ore
could also in turn be used to harvest an exclusive block(s) in the overworld or the end. But that's just an idea.

Partial support, perhaps flesh this out a little more.
But i agree, nether and end both are quite lacking...

Minimal support.

the durability is accounted for. The main idea behind this was a pickaxe that could
sometimes auto-smelt any other ore. also due to the fact the material would be
heavily gas-based is why I included blaze products to assist in stability. Perhaps
redundant but nevertheless a good starting point.
The other idea that perhaps a unique block in the overworld or end that could only
be mined with this material. Doesn't gotta be brimstone. Also the primary advantage
to the other weapons is the lack of need for enchantment. Although their durability
is lacking.
primarily going for something that incorporates a type of enchantment minus xp loss
while also giving a small use that wouldn't effect overall play but unique enough
to make a difference. I was between brimstone, ash or perhaps lava stone.
if anyone has a material suggestion please by all means. I'll research any suggestions
and attempt to create some items that would pertain to.
as far as "needing" diamonds to enter the nether... give me a few buckets of lava and
some dirt and just 1 bucket of water. I'll get into the nether often before I go spelunking.
especially with surface lava.
