I like it, execpt for the trading system.
And what is world rank?
Would also be nice if there was sort of 'join server' button if they where in a server.
but trading is not good. might work for mmo's using a single big map, but not with minecraft.
imagine your friend having tons of diamond leftovers, and you just bought and started minecraft.
he wants to give you diamond for free. that ruins the game.
Err...he could still give you the diamonds by dropping them with Q.
The trade system would be useful so that:
A. Someone doesn't run by and swoop up your stuff when you drop it
B. You don't drop first and risk the other person running away with your stuff and not giving you anything.
OT: I don't play SMP, but I support this. Sounds useful.
I wouldn't like the text chat colors much though, it'd get annoying.
I said you wouldn't have to download 1-3MB thats your generated terrain/landscape (your items are only a couple of KB)
Runescape manages to does it, and their even running the game in Java (and they have a client .exe).
I just think trading would be a cool idea, its made so many games more successful since it's introduction.
- Runescape
- Team Fortress 2
- Crossfire/Combat Arms
Keep the questions coming.
i agree on the tradeing as it is i play ona pvp server and there is no safe way to swap items
but include digital currency controllable by admins that can be traded as well
Unfortunately, the digital currency (if cross server) would be just as exploitable. If you want local currency, download iconomy. Safe item swapping can be achieved with a little ingenuity, create some rooms with water flows to each other and doors blocking the items from crossing. Set up a pair of levers and an and gate so when both participants see that the trade is fair, they OK it. I think ill go build one...
Move the delete friend to a seperate spot. The lower right hand corner would do well. Also Have a delete friend confirmation just for good measure. Wouldnt want to get bumped and remove your bestest buddy notch now would you?
Take out the trading system, and world ranks..That's about it. Everything else would be golden. I can't tell you how many times I wanted a friend to come on the server I was on when he was off in SSP or something...
I like the idea a lot, but I have a couple of suggestions.
The trading should only work if you're both in the same server, or it doesn't make sense (I don't know if there should be a 'minimum distance' to make it work, though).
Also, perhaps it would be nice if you had only access to basic information about your friends unless you were in the same server. What I mean is ;
When you're in different servers ---> Online/Offline, Since when (what time), Name of Server (they are on).
When you're in the same server ---> (all the ones above and the following information : ) Activity (Mining, Fighting, Sleeping, Idle (not moving at all since some time), Chatting, etc), Health (not "4hp" but things like "Healthy, Alright, Normal, In Danger, Dead"), etc....
I don't think the trade system should work multiserver... it should be in game only, else you're going to have a lot of people's carefully crafted systems broken/ abused
We have a pretty good inter-server marketplace going on. Come check it out.
I kinda like it, but some of this just doesn't make sense. Like why would you need a friends list? There is one on the fourms! I do like the trading idea though. Could you trade in game? Your reward is a ride-able and maybe 10
I love it, but it will probably never get in. Notch is too lazy to implement at least one of these, or at least spend money setting up the chat and rank things.
This. Lazy doesn't seem like the right word.
But then again, I don't know how else to describe it.

I love Blizzard, but god help me, WoW is a giant money engine that uses human souls as fuel.
You know, there's this nifty function in steam called "Add a Non-Steam Game..." which allows you to add, guess what?! Minecraft to you your steam account! This allows you to get access to all normal in-game steam social functions such as chat and friend updates while playing.
Herp Derp, the "Social Overhaul" suggestion is now obsolete for Steam users.
What? You don't use Steam you say? What sort of prehistoric rock are you living under?! You can only blame yourself for not having a decent in-game chat/voip/social networking client, you Neanderthal!

I use steam, and to be honest this way better than any thing steam has to offer minecraft. That and minecraft would be easier to use for new player (to minecraft or gaming in general).
btw not everyone use steam, only about 4 million which isn't a lot when you think about it.
Okay, I have to say this: what is the point of the "Online" tab? Couldn't this just get incorporated into a sub category on the "Select an IP Address" screen?
The trading screen could be added in a mod, maybe a bit more simple, but it will do. Maybe there is a way you can only use it if you're in a shop?
