It'd be cool to have an oil drum or something, but there's chests already.:sad.gif:
The drum is DEFINITELY a possibility. It could store oil that pour into it with buckets. Then you could get the oil back by whacking the barrel with an empty bucket! We have created an ingenious idea!!!

Oil could make oil lamps, power furnaces, or perhaps (if ever added) used to fuel the engines of a car.
I like the idea of cars but.... Minecraft = blocks...
SQUARE WHEELS?!?!?!?!?!
Additionally, oil should definitely have effects on the environment. (We all know what BP did). It should slowly kill animals and make then drop nothing. Those who survive turn sickly and black and don't drop anything either. However, they can be healed with, time, (NEW IDEA!) soap, lots of water. It should also kill ocean life, and make "sick dead fish" float to the surface. Upon consumption, you lose 2 hearts. Just some ideas, but I most definitely :iapprove:. Oil is a necessity (though maybe not for long) IRL, it should be so in Minecraft.

The lamps could be hung on walls also, they shine brighter than normal torches and never burn out when placed on a wall though.
When you hold the lamp as a tool the cave would light up...
Notch IS going to make lamps. They have an indefinite life span and will replace torches. They may also implement lightstone dust. The new torches will burn out and require flint and steel to rekindle.

WE GOT OIL!!
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I start out each morning with a nice, hot cup o' Minecraft!
It'd be cool to have an oil drum or something, but there's chests already.:sad.gif:

Or maybe barrels that could carry water or even lava! (Because of Minecrafts deemed "Medieval" time period.)
If notch decides to change his mind about no oil, here's my Idea laws of minecraft oil physics:
1----- It flows one unit in every direction. The flow blocks would go at a 45 degree angle to the ground.
1.5--- From a spring when falling vertically, its would fall straight vertically and not spread at the spring like water.
2----- Walking / swimming in it makes for incredibly slow movement.
2.5--- 2x as fast Suffocation
3----- Infinite oil springs can only be found naturally; they can not be made with 2 oil buckets
4----- Oil in a bucket x1 can power a furnace for 25 smelts
5----- Oil can be used to make Torches
6----- No Vehicles.↙(Period)
7----- If oil (lake or otherwise) is set on fire, it will spread for 5 blocks in every direction before dieing out
8----- If oil meets water, they will stay seperate like real oil and water
8.25- If oil is poured on water, it will float on top
8.5-- If water is poured on oil, it will sink to the bottom
8.75- If it meets lava, it will burn. Refer to Law 7
9----- Re-read law 6. Read it thoroughly. Vehicles require long and horrible code
10---- We will all cheer if adds oil.
I like this idea. Except a few things:
1. Vehicles = no, just no. If there are going to be vehicles, they will either be powered by MANLINESS or COAL.
2. I don't think there should be infinite sources. That would be abused by pyros.
3. What if you right click an entire lake of oil with ? The entire thing fills with flames and magically disappears?
4. In the OP, could you come up with a final decision as to what happens when oil meets water? O.o
I'm guessing that oil + lava = Big boom.

Actually, that's the best mental image ever. A dying, drowning man stuffing his face from a massive wall of cake, and carving out a monstrous underwater cake picture. I'd pay to watch that irl.

Read my Laws that are placed 2 above this post.
OK, might want to add that to the OP for newbs like me. :smile.gif:
Anyway, so you're saying that if water is poured on oil, it will treat it like a solid block and just flow over it? And vice versa?
Also, oil should be used in lanterns as an alternative to lightstone if he does incorporate them, to balance the fact that there are two ways of creating torches as well (coal and charcoal).
Finally, an alternative consideration for oil physics is that it works similarly to SDK's gun mod oil? (minus its use in the flamethrower and its crafting recipe, of course). It acts similar to redstone, with a meter of the level of oil in the bucket, and can be picked back up. In this form, it creates a giant trail of fire in its wake. Maybe if you right click a spot once, it does that, and more times (two or the whole bucket), it behaves as you proposed?
Just my 0.02.

Well, I'm newbier than you and don't know what an OP is ... so... I will try to answer as many questions as I can. I have added numbers. Look up, back down. See them?
1 No, but vice versa, since water is denser than oil, oil would FLOAT ON WATER, but water would SINK IN OIL.
2 Yes
3 Not quite sure what you mean there, I have herd of... SDK's gun mod oil
4 No, not really. I meant more of it be just a viscus liquid. all or nothing, same as water and magma.
I have an Idea here!
3 ways to obtain oil:
Killing pigs to obtain fat which is 'smelted' to make oil,
Whales
Oilsprings (should flow out of the ground).

When the block directly above it would start flowing up and make a mess :3

OP, I think, stands for "original post" in the forums. As in, your first post here, so everyone can see it without having to scan through the replies.
Anyway, SDK's mods feature oil as a substance crafted by water surrounded by gunpowder (not that logical) and is used as flamethrower feed. It has a durability meter, and you can pour a certain amount (which I'm sure is less than 20). I was just thinking this could be combined with your current proposal, double right clicking to make it behave as your proposal and single click to make it act like that.
Well, you cleared up a lot of stuff. I support.

I understand but don't really know how that even relates to minecraft.

Edit:
In other words, for law 1

Could have even more uses when notch addes custom vehicles.
