To start things off, most of the ideas in this thread are not my own, but a combined version of this thread and this thread. Before you start spamming me saying this is stealing, I was given written permission from both thread creators to use/edit their ideas, and that this thread is an example of someone doing the same thing.
Now, as the Thread Name suggests, this thread details a complete overhaul of the Vanilla Boat mechanics.
Boat Health and Speed
*Original Idea by Gman712
To start things off, the first major change is how boats break. Each boat has a health bar similar to Horse Health, but the Icons are the Boat Item. Each time you hit a block that would normally break your boat, half of one of the boat health icons would disappear. How fast you are going is a major factor as well. The faster you are going, the more damage you do to your boat. Each kind of Boat has a set Health and Speed. When broken with your fist, the Boat's Health will be displayed via a tooltip when hovering over it in your Inventory.

Encrusted Boats give the player the ability to increase the Total Health of Boats for the cost of Reduced Speed. Encrusted Boat Health and Statistics detailed in the Boat Health and Speed section.
Longboats
*Original Idea by DesinitDraco
Longboats are a new kind of boat with a few new uses. They are twice as long, being able to hold two things (be it 2 Players, a Furnace, or 2 Chests). For their bigger size, they have more Health than their normal Boat counterparts, but also differ in Speed depending on their contents. Crafting Recipie
Boat can be substituted for any Encrusted Boat and Wood Planks substituted for Boat Material
Wood Longboat - +2(1 Icon) Health & -3% Speed Iron Longboat - +6(3 Icons) Health & -7% Speed Gold Longboat - +4(2 Icons) Health & -5% Speed Diamond Longboat - +10(5 Icons) Health & -11% Speed Emerald Longboat - +8(4 Icons) Health & -9% Speed Obsidian Longboat -+14(7 Icons) Health & -15% Speed
*Original Idea by swaglord676
Crafted the same way as Powered Minecarts, except with the Boat in place of the Minecart, they can be used to push Storage Boats across water, or as a motor for a Player in a Longboat. They are powered just the same as Powered Minecarts. Powered Boats or Longboats are 13% faster than their Unpowered counterparts.
Storage Boats
*Original Idea by swaglord676 and Gman712
Crafted like Minecarts w/ Chest, they add the ability to store items in Boats. A Boat w/ Chest is 3% slower than their Empty counterparts.
Crafting Boats
*Idea by Badprenup
Crafting Boats and Longboats give the Player the option to Craft on the go. A Boat w/ Crafting Table is 3% slower than their Empty counterparts.
*Gif by Gman712
Paddles are a manual way to increase the Speed of your Boat or Longboat for short bursts. Each type of Paddle has a durability and increases your Boat or Longboat's Speed by a different amount.
With all these speed buff/debuffs stacked it is possible to have a Gold Longboat(122% Base Speed) w/ a Player & Furnace(+10% Speed) and have the player use a Golden Paddle (+45% Speed) for a total of 177% Speed. This is 77% faster than the Default Boat we already have.

12/28/2014 @ 8:58PM CST - Encrusted Boats give Speed Boosts; Crafting Boats added; Removed 2 Chest Longboats
12/28/2014 @ 9:00PM CST - Added Boat Health display via tooltip
I like the boat health, long boats (although I dislike the idea of two chests in a long boat, I think it should always have to have a spot for a player), and bannered boats. I would like the ability to put a crafting table in a long boat as well.
I dislike all tiers of boats besides wood. They seem unneeded, I would never make any tier besides the wood because the other ones just don't seem as good. More health isn't needed as 10 health will keep your boat alive a long time unless you are an idiot who repeatedly crashes, and none gives you a speed increase.
I also dislike powered boats and paddles, as regular boats already go extremely fast. The extra speed isn't necessary. Having a furnace in a boat is fine, I just think it should be for portable smelting.

Well, as you said, there are likely people how there who are constantly crashing their boats, and with no established way of repairing a Boat or Longboat (although a method using an Anvil could be created), the higher-tier boats could be far more useful. Also, as you also said, maybe they could provide Speed Boosts to make them more worthwhile.
The idea of Crafting Boats seems like a good idea, and maybe Boats could have a GUI, and if they had a Furnace in them, it would not only push you along, but smelt items simultaneously.
Although default Boats are pretty fast already, they could possibly be slightly nerfed to give Powered Boats and Paddles more application. Plus some people think it takes too long to move across large Oceans, and both are applicable means of shortening that time by a potentially substantial amount.
Personally, I think when you break a boat with your fist, it should drop a boat with the health shown either as a durability bar or a tooltip. Partial support.
I just updated the OP, so you might want to check that
I was actually just trying to decide whether I should show the health left via durability or tooltip. I think I might go with a tooltip.
Minecraft is not medieval-themed!!! As a matter of fact, it doesn't have a set time. And when and WHY did putting reponses in the quote, especially long ones, become a trend in the Suggestions? It's rather inconvenient, mainly since the OP has to gather your quote up manually. Avatar made by Endergirl!
