Hello. Hi. Hey. S'up? How's it goin'? Greetings. Salutations. Hola. Bonjour. Aloha. Those are just a couple ways to say 'hi'. But that's not what this thread is about, is it?
Hey Everybody! This is AJPirate and this is my new idea for an overhauled hunger system in Minecraft! Now, before I start, I wanna note, that there are some other threads about this but most of them are a couple months to a couple years old. So I'm going to say this is valid. You can argue if you want I guess.
Note: Any sections with * at the end means that they are open for suggestions.
Anyway, here's the idea.
Overview:So, the idea is for a new overhauled hunger system. Because in my (and some other people's opinions) the hunger system currently is kinda pointless and just tedious sometimes. And this will make it more tedious. But really, I hope that this suggestion could make the hunger system have more of a point and be more fun/frustrating to maintain.
Hunger System:So before we get on to some of the new foods lets talk hunger. Hunger System. B), So, the hunger system will be more balanced and have more of a point. The hunger bar would no longer be measured in halves and wholes but in quarters, thirds, halves, wholes, and all that jazz. Each hunger icon would be a total of 4 hunger points. Which means if you had full hunger, you'd have a total of 40 hunger points. You may say 'But then they would have to completely re-do the amount of hunger everything fills!' Sort of. But say you were eating steak, which restores 4 wholes of hunger, or 8 hunger points. (as it is currently measured in halves, so 8 = 4, or 2 = 1.) If you had 2 & 1/4 of hunger left. It would just bump you up to 6 & 1/4 hunger left. Still keeping it's current measurements. Or, if you ate bread. Which does 2 & 1/2 hunger. (Or 4 & 1/2 hunger points.) And you had 3 & 3/4 of hunger left. It would just bump you to 6 & 1/4 left. See, because 2 & 1/2 + 3 & 3/4 = 6 & 1/2. Math! My avatar! Now you might say, 'But what about it running out!? WHAT ABOUT IT RUNNING OUT AJ!?!?' Well, each point (or quarter) of hunger would run out 2 times as fast as a point (half) runs out now! I know your thinking that's fast, but keep reading! Keep in mind that now you have more hunger than before, it takes longer to run out as you now have 40 points rather than 20. But at the same time it runs out 2 times faster. Meaning it almost runs out the same speed. Also, there are some effects that are consaquinces of not eating enough. Read on to the next........chapter? *
Effects of not eating enough:If your hunger gets below 4, then you will get slight mining fatigue until you boost your hunger up a bit. If your hunger drops below 2, then you get speed loss. The mining fatigue and speed loss increase as your hunger decreases below that number. If your hunger is at 0 for more than 2 minutes then you die. This may seem a small list, but I think it's fine. *
Effects of having good hunger:Yes, that's right! You get rewarded for eating a lot! If your hunger stays above 5 for more than 2 ingame says straight, then you will get haste for as long as you can maintain in, keep in mind the haste does not increase over time like the bad effects. Also, if you can keep your hunger above 7 for more than 5 ingame days straight, then you get speed for as long as you can maintain it, keep in mind the speed does not increase over time like the bad effects. And finally, if you can keep your hunger at 9 or more for more than 7 ingame days straight, you get all the previous effects (not bad ones) and regeneration! Keep in mind the regeneration does not increase over time like the bad effects. *
So that's my idea for a new overhauled hunger system! Tell me what you think in the comments!
The problem with the current hunger system is that it is absurdly easy to get food, and with the effects you mention it would be insanely overpowered; so I can now mine 6,000 ore per play session instead of just 3,000, so long as I pay attention to my hunger level? Great!
No, leave those effects for beacons (why are beacons so hard to get and limited in range? hmm...) or potions, and there is no point in making each hunger bar represent twice as much food but deplete just as fast (i.e. twice the points per bar but twice the loss rate for the same overall rate).
And it would be even more tedious as well since you need to eat twice as much food (as it restores just as many points as it currently does) - that's the biggest problem I've seen said about the current hunger system, and partly why I have the eating habits that I have (wait until hunger drops to 1 hunger bar, sometimes 4, then fill up; three baked potatoes (before 1.8) will completely fill hunger and saturation; I usually only need to eat to heal because I was poisoned or had a close creeper encounter, otherwise, a heart or two lost isn't a big deal when your armor effectively gives you 4x as much health and some people call even iron armor "incredibly overpowered").
Overall, I don't find hunger to be a problem; I typically play for 3-4 hours and consume half a stack of baked potatoes (plus some bread from chests), mostly eaten 2-3 at a time. A single baked potato restores 13.2 hunger and saturation (11 in 1.8) and assuming all of that was usable enables you to do any of the following (calculated as 13.2 * (4 / depletion rate), where 4 is the number of exhaustion points per hunger point; if you eat steaks instead, multiply by 20.8 / 13.2, or 1.5757...):
Walk 5,280 meters
Sprint 528 meters
Jump 264 times
Sprint-jump 66 times
Mine 2,112 blocks
Regenerate 17-18 health points (13-14 if you eat just one as only 3 of the 6 hunger points are usable, dropping you down to 17 hunger, but over time it averages 17.6)
Note that armor reduces damage taken, so with full diamond armor you could take 5 times as much damage for the same amount of hunger lost (although if you lose like 0.2 health (e.g. 20% of a cactuses damage), not even visible as half a heart lost, you will lose as much hunger as regenerating 1 full health point; 1.5 health = 2 points, etc, so many small hits do add up more than expected). Also, note the low number of sprinting jumps you can do; I see videos of people sprint-jumping all over the place despite the hunger hit, then complain about having to eat all the time... I only do it if I have to jump anyway and I doubt it is much faster, except in 2-block high areas (for which the Wiki notes "this can easily drain food at a rate of about 1 unit per second").
How long does it take me to harvest half a stack of potatoes? Maybe 20 seconds (e.g. harvest an 8x8 plot using Fortune III, netting about 3 stacks; time includes replanting and loading/unloading furnaces). So that's what I mean about food being absurdly easy to get, and even before you have a farm animals are abundant (especially in 1.8; no worrying about finding food when you can now kill the sheep that are the only animal around you).
Also, how does one "keep their hunger at full for 7 days"? Unless you just stand there - your have to lose some hunger in order to eat - which of course means your hunger is no longer full! Or did you mean like 9 hunger bars full (i.e. enough to regenerate health normally)?

I'm sorry you don't support this idea. I realize how easy it is to get food after you posted this and then realized I can normally get about 3 stacks of wheat in one harvesting. I'm thinking of some ideas to edit the OP, got any? Also, the 'keeping hunger full for seven days' is a challenge and yes, I did mean 9 hunger, sorry, I'll change the OP to be more understandable.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
