3rd person at the moment is useless if we made it something like this, it maybe of benefit for those who wish to use third person in a mob fight or on a server.
new idea
This is over-the-shoulder view, not 3d view. I would suggest adding this new one instead of replacing the old one. That way no one complains about the removal of something helpful for him ( but not for you or some others ).
Being a nerd is nothing to be ashamed of. Nerds rule the world! Who invented the internet? Nerds. Who created personal computers and smart phones? Nerds. Who made every video game you've ever played and ever will? Still nerds. Who sent probes to distant planets? Nerds, nerds and more nerds! I'm a nerd and I'm proud.
The in-the-field cameraman look is called the second person view. First person is from the eyes of the player. Second person is from the eyes of someone following the player. Third person is from the eyes of no present party.
I don't see why you think 3rd person is useless at the moment, it is rather helpful, imo. It helps if you want to see what's behind you, have a little larger view of the scenery, or just to take a little picture.
as now the 3rd person view is so hard to play with since the head of the player is blocking the view it's only good for showing your character in a video or an image
so adding a new over the shoulder view would be so helpful (at least for me)

This would be helpful in some situations, and it could come with an option to set which shoulder of the player the camera is over (right or left). This would definitely be an improvement from the default 3rd person.

I've been digging and all I've found is new places to ask around about it. *sad face*
