It's more of a stretch because it is in no way intuitive. You expect a wolf pack to attack you if you attack one. You don't expect foxes to have Thorns, especially when they don't otherwise seem to attack you. You don't expect to receive a slowness effect for killing one. Neither of those things make sense outside of a balance perspective.
It's also not especially balanced. One point of damage for attacking one? That's nothing. Or may as well be, when you can kill it in two hits with almost every sword. 20 seconds of slowness is only annoying. 5 seconds of slowness is nothing. I don't know how the slowness prevents complaints of animal abuse, but it's not a very good motivator for not cutting off fox tails.
Okay. You've justified the response. It'll take a while to edit this- do you have any recommendations for mob balancing that doesn't use status effects? I made the fox run because that's what they do, requesting them to be even smarter than I already suggested them to be would make them too complex. They seem to only have the ability to run to caves and hunt like wolves- run to caves being the only new feature. would it be shooting myself in the foot to request the question :Could status effects be a mob feature?

Status effects can be a mob feature, but it should make intuitive sense. Like cave spiders and poison. Foxes don't bring potion effects to mind.
You could have them run inside generated dens where we can't follow unless we dig to them, and then if we dig to them have them jump out and attack with several baby foxes. You could have them weave through trees so that it's harder to hit them. You could have them burrow, though having a mob alter the landscape is a bit iffy. I'm sure if you thought about it long enough you could come up with something.

I Love the sound of those mechanics- but like you said mobs altering landscape is pretty difficult/edgy. How does "they become hostile at night / low light level" sound? Also should the fox be killed to receive a "fox tail" (also thinking of changing fox tail to fox pelt)?

That sounds good, though hopefully it's not just that. I think that the fox tail should come from a fox that's killed. Anything else just seems pointlessly cruel.
I wholeheartedly support this idea, mainly because I think that Minecraft desperately needs an autumn biome (And I do think this because autumn is my favorite season). However, I think that the red might gain from being less... bloody red, as Ouatcheur puts it.
Yes, perhaps a slightly brighter red, and perhaps some yellow and orange mixed in to give it a full autumn feel. The biome's a bit too monochromatic for my tastes, though I didn't realize it until now.
I would personally like the biome better if the ground wasnt such a sharp contrast, maybe make it a kind of reddish brown like red leaning podzol and we would be in business. Support apart from above mentioned detail
Honestly, I like the idea of the forest. It's a nice touch simply for aesthetic purposes alone. The fox also seems like a nice idea. I'm not sure what to think of the uses for the tail or the triple-shot bow, though.
I think it should be one of that "If you don't want to, don't do it" things. If you don't want it to be tameable, just dont tame. I would love to have a fox pet.
And the scarlet forest is a really nice new biome. I am just missing one thing: had you though about adding new flowers? That would be nice. My flower pots collections need more itens. I know, I will have the red maple sprout, but more is better.
And an idea (sorry, I really liked your suggestion, so as I write more, more ideas appear): maple syrup would be nice

You don't understand how pets work, it's not something that can be added willy nilly with this excuse in mind.
On Topic the color of thei biome doesn't feel very autumn colored and more bloody. And what's up with that fox? It's stats are ok, but it has the ability to give you slowness and you take damage if you hit them? That's not right, please change that.

So, there is a golden rule that defines what can be a pet or not? The OC argument about fox not being a pet is because he thinks there is too many pets. I can understand that opinion, but I think that having fox as a pet is cool. But maybe you could explain me the pets manual?

In minecraft pets should only be added if they have a use, there aren't too many pets, only three. There was a thread about foxes a while ago that was a copy of wolves, nobody liked it.

Nothing should be added to the game because it's "cool." Adding things for the sake of adding things, or for purely individualistic appeal is extremely bad game design. There exists a pattern in the game which demonstrates that pets are there to aid you, whether it's as an attacking force (wolves) or to ward off danger (cats). If something exists as a pet and does not aid its owner, then it's pointless to add the mechanic because it ultimately does nothing.

Well Pets would be cool, but without a new mechanic to implement them is a waste of code space.

Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — "No, you move

This will be updated later- I am revoking some additions I made here. I have a huge project at hand.

Maybe foxes could have the tracking utility. It makes sense since they have a good nose. They could work tracking things that you let him smell. You give him a piece of meat, it will track the nearest cattle under a limited range. You need to find your friend, you give it anything that was originally crafted by your pal. And so on... To not be so OP, he wouldn't be able to track anything. It would help to find rare crops, like carrot, but not too much over powered, because the tracking range is limited and you need to have at least one carrot to start the search.

I think that deer should be added as well to add to the hunting "vibe". Deer could have antlers grow in random configurations like chorus plants but have it set up so they still look realistic. And foxes should not attack sheep, they should attack rabbits and deer. Also, not sure if this is pushing it, but maybe bears? they could be an awesome neutral mob. And the biome could use a little more color instead of red, but that should still be the base color. Maybe the biome's colors could have animated texture like the prismarine.

Suggest this somewhere else nobody likes people who make suggestions in another persons suggestion, but this has already been suggested before with the same abilities.

Actually I do admire a suggestion, but I don't admire them when they are completely diehard to get it implemented especially when it doesn't fit exactly.
