The Air Cannon is a block that fires a continuous gust of air when powered.
This gust travels 4 blocks, blowing away any entities and activating any buttons within its path.
If the Air Cannon loses power, it stops firing.
A display of the Air Cannon's pushing power. It attempts to launch the Cow 4 blocks away, but a wall prevents the Cow from moving any further.
What are its uses?
The Air Cannon can be used for traps or simple airlifts. If pointed downwards, it can prevent players from jumping.
Alternatively, it can be used for Redstone circuits, activating buttons from afar without the need for Dust.
The Air Cannon activates a button attached to a Lamp.
The Air Cannon can also activate buttons vertically.
A compressed circuit using an Air Cannon. Note: When the Button is pushed, all three Pistons will activate at the same time.
Technical Details
The Air Cannon has an delay of a single Redstone tick, much like a Repeater.
When activated, it checks for buttons and entities 4 blocks in front of it every Redstone tick. ~Thank you UberFubarius
If a block is placed within the Air Cannon's path, its range will be cut accordingly.
The Air Cannon has a unique property in that if it actives a button, the button stays activated until the air flow is disabled.
The Air Cannon has a range limit of 4 blocks. For it to activate it a button, the two blocks must be facing each.
The Air Cannon can also activate levers. Unlike buttons, these will not reset and can be toggled. This particular circuit is a T Flip Flop.
The Air Cannon can flash freeze water into ice.
**Introduction**:
The Air Cannon is a block that is crafted from a Dispenser and a Piston.
When powered, it releases a powerful gust of air that will activate switches (buttons, levers) and push away entities within four blocks in front of it.
----
**Behaviors**:
Both the Air Cannon's initial delay and activation duration lasts a single Redstone Tick.
It can only trigger buttons or toggle levers facing in its direction.
Additionally, placing a full block within its range will reduce it accordingly. Blocks like slabs, stairs, and Redstone components are exempt from this behavior.

- A T Flip-Flop. Each time the button is pushed, the Air Cannon activates, toggling the lever's state.
http://i.imgur.com/7uB3twp.png
- A compact circuit. When the button is pushed, every Piston will activate at the same time.
----
**Why**:
Although wireless Redstone is a touchy subject it ultimately already exists. Dispensers are capable of activating buttons by firing arrows at them. Unfortunately, their bad aim and inability to run indefinitely makes them impractical for this use.
The Air Cannon's purpose is to provide a form of wireless Redstone that fits well with the game.
Its accuracy and reliability makes it superior to Dispensers in that aspect, but its low range encourages players to be creative with it.
That limitation prevents it from replacing most existing circuits, but it would open up a massive number of possibilities.
Thematically, it represents a mixture between a Dispenser and a Piston, carrying the former's ranged capabilities and the latter's usage as a Redstone component.
ME SUPPORT! i love the idea and it fits in minecraft as much as a daylight sensor

he Air Cannon works on a principal similar to the Piston. When activated, it creates 4 technical blocks that handle the pushing functionality.
If this is the behavior, then your third example of "pushing" a button to activate piston may not work as the block right in front of the piston isn't open air and the button itself isn't "open air". As such, there's no place to spawn a technical block to do the pushing. Several possible solutions are as followed.
Use something else beside a technical block. One possibility is to spawn it as a non-solid, non-physics entity of sort. Potentially causing lag, especially if you want to attach some sort of air blowing animation to it.
No block entity, but have the air cannon apply acceleration (and activate components) to everything in the 4 block range. Again, potentially laggy if you have a large number of Air Cannons.
f a block is placed within the Air Cannon's path, the range will be cut accordingly.
Note that pressure plates, buttons, tripwire also count as blocks. I'm guessing you don't mean all "non-air" block (also note above, non-air block takes up a block, so you can't spawn technical block in them).
I like the idea itself, but I have to agree with Uber, there could be lag, some "non" blocks are actually blocks, etc..

This is actually a cool idea. It fits, and it makes sense. I can see a few possibilities for this. One question, though. What does it look like?
Anyway, support.

I've added two new pictures. One is a GIF showing its usage as an airlift and the other is a one showing how the Air Cannon works on levers.
I can think of so many fun uses for this, and your solution for the functionality makes a lot of sense. Since it could basically be just 1 entity controlling the "gusting" across 4 blocks I really dont' see a lag problem. Then all you need is to apply an acceleration to entities caught in the gust proportional to the distance from the air cannon. Quite simple. All entities that "collide" with the gust entity are identified (rather than an area check constantly) then do the math based on distances. Now you only need to keep up with 1 entity to make this work and checks for other entities aren't needed. It just triggers when another entity collides with the gust animation entity. This is about the same overhead as keeping up with a single blaze without the AI.

One question though: Will entities in the range be blown back 4 blocks or was that just the range?

The range is 4 blocks. Any entities within those 4 blocks will be blown to the edge of the edge of the 5th block.
