When chickens, players, pigs, cows, horses and other mobs walk on dirt it leaves footprints that can enhance things like hunting.
only works on "loose" particle blocks like dirt and podzol (excluding sand).
now before you say all legs are blocks the footprint will be shaped differently, for example "hoof" shaped footprints for horses and chicken leg footprints and such, also quad-block footprint for creeper.
Mobs only form footprints when they are in a 20 block (?) radius around the player, you guys can choose the radii sizes.
all footprints stay for 20 seconds, 10 seconds when exposed to rain and instantly when exposed to water/lava.
Emmmmm.... I guess... It wouldn't be too helpful... But aesthetics are aesthetics.

A footprint cannot stay instantly.
It's not a bad idea, but for of it to be of any use whatsoever, beyond aesthetics, should be much more than 20 blocks and 20 seconds. Though I do support the rain/water/lava erasing them.

Well, for one, if you generally cant already find an animal without a guide such as footprints, then chances are there isn't one around. two, I feel like even though people are reasoning that it would help people that are on low render distances or have crappy computers find stuff that they cant see because of their distance, even though its would be laggy enough just to render them and whatnot. three, if its really that hard to find things, then youre obviously doing something very wrong since its too easy already.

Will there be a setting to turn the footprints on and off?
I have a special ability to change colors, I can change into just about any Color.
I got this special ability from eating a Grand Star.
