But you do need eyes of ender to access the End. Thus Eyes of Ender, and their ingredients, (Combined with an ender portal frame) are already objects that directly unlock other objects (endstone, dragon egg) and features (access to the End, chance to fight the Enderdragon, opportunity to build an efficient enderpearl farm, etc).
I mean hell, In order to make minecarts and rails you need to mine iron which requires you to have crafted at least a stone pickaxe and build a furnace which requires at least a wood pickaxe. Pickaxes, items integral to Minecraft, are objects that directly unlock other objects/features. Pickaxes have no alternatives... well okay, they have a VASTLY INFERIOR alternative of crafting TNT and having a 70% chance of destroying the ore you're trying to mine.
Can't make an enchanting table without first making a diamond pickaxe.

So it's... par for the course really.
Theoretically, you can get iron rails and minecarts without mining iron by raiding mineshafts, picking up the rails on the ground, and using iron from the chests to make a minecart. And you can get an enchantment table without making a diamond pick by casting a Nether Portal using buckets, and raid netherfortresses for diamonds and obsidian found within their chests (or raid villages, but that's boring). It's stupid and impractical, but it's an option.
The biggest "unlocking" thing in the game is the humble stick which requires punching wood or witches, but aside from that there's generally more than one way to get something in the game, directly or indirectly (you need enderpearls to get to the End no matter what, but you can get enderpearls both from villager trading and killing Endermen and Blazes.
But I'm nitpicking. It's better to say "there's a clearly defined way to progress through the game that you can break if you're insane or extremely bored" than anything else.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
The textures remind me of the Aether mod which is already full of features without the purifying end thing but still you get a cool looking sky dimension and get to keep the end.

Yeah, however the Aether is a completely separate dimension. Also, the Aether is a mod, but originally started out as a suggestion here on the forums. This thread has no affiliation or intention of adding the Aether in vanilla. For a few reasons, it just doesn't work. Minecraft isn't a dungeon crawling game, and what you get from the mobs, loot, and ores are not very useful at all in the normal world or the Nether.
This seems like it would be cool. Support what you have so far.

To those of you suggesting new uses for Emeralds in the suggestions forum: Emeralds have enough uses. You can trade with villagers to get diamond armor/tools/weapons and enchants. Stop suggesting that Emeralds are useless, and learn to play Minecraft. Thanks.

Minecraft is whatever we make it in Aether you are not forced to do the dungeons they are optional and also minecraft already has similar elements to the dungeons in the Aether just not as advanced. Just because you think minecraft shouldn't have those features doesn't mean that you are right. Remember when minecraft didn't have all these RPG elements? Enchanting and xp and all that. I'm pretty sure at some point someone like you said "Minecraft is not an RPG" and then the RPG elements were added just not as complicated as in other games. And to some extend minecraft has those "dungeon crawler" elements just not as complex as other games. And just because a game has a certain mechanic like rpg elements doesn't mean that it's "an rpg game" as in only an an rpg game. To this day minecraft has a lot of mechanics that other games have and everyone says different things about minecraft "it's a cool building game", "It's an awesome survival game", "It's a nice rpg" and at the end it's not just one of those things it's all. Minecraft is what you make it to be you are not forced to enter the instances as you are not forced to go mining or enter the nether or purify the end.
Just because you say "RPG" or "Dungeon crawling" elements won't work doesn't mean anything without proof. You are just giving an opinion a preference of things YOU think would work or not and just because YOU say things won't fit the game doesn't mean you are right. It's like if a player before the creative mode update said "It won't work because minecraft is not a game where you get everything you want with ease" that doesn't mean he is right because right now there are people who love that mode. Everyone likes different things and adding such dungeon crawl elements would only mean more audience for the game it would probably bring more adventurous people to the game who like to explore.
Also I don't see the problem in it being a second dimension it's a different way to get to it yes but at the end of the day you still have to do something to activate the damn thing weather it be by purifying it or making a portal it doesn't matter. Whether you cut your bread with a knife with a red handle or a blue handle at the end it's still a slice of bread.
PS: just because items don't work well everywhere doesn't mean it's bad it's again just your opinion not the truth.

Also this post has been made a while ago I would totally support it that way as your own suggestion - while still amazing and interesting - might be too hard and complicated to implement. But I agree there definitely should be something to strive for after defeating the Dragon. The End could be some sort or Dimension in between Overworld and sky and act as some sort of keyholder (as in the key to sky would be the dragonling and to get it you need to get the egg hence you need to go to the end first in order to go to the sky)...
I didn't add an idea for a baby Dragon, as much as I like the idea of it. Why? Well for starters its asked waaayyy too much on these forums. Then, it just wouldn't fit considering the egg is being used as a purification module. Perhaps it could be after purification Red Dragons could spawn randomly. But I'll leave that up to Jens and Nathan once they touch the Red Dragon in the future.
This thread and idea really has something to it, but there's a few issues with the concept. I may create a different thread for End improvement. Thoughts on that?
^ This.

Ps. Their "big thing" with the egg is coming in 1.9 which probably wont come till mid 2015.
