Basics:
What is basically food poisoning? It is something you get from eating unresponsively and not washing up before eatting. This can also be caused from lack of hygiene. Such as:
Causes:
Not taking a swim once every game week. (10% Over time)
Eating raw foods. (37% Chance)
Eating rotten foods that has been in chests for days/weeks. (93% Chance)
Standing in a area that has a wide variety of toxins/bacteria (Eg: A place full of animals) without ventlation. (Eg: Doors/Walls.) (5% Over time)
ETC. Anything I missed.
Effects:
Food poisoning can effect the player by draining his or hers hp slowly over time. (2 weeks in-game.)
Keeps the player in hunt of fresh food.
ETC. Anything I missed.
Cures:
Food poisoning can be cured by eating cooked meals and/or healthy fruit.
Herbs.
Garlic.
ETC. Anything else I missed.
Alternatives:
Wait it out.
Suicide.
All from the wiki.
Constructive criticism only please.
This concept would work wonders with Chezzies Hunger Concept.
Rotten Foods:
Basics:
Obviously, food that has been in a area of warmth for a long period of time it well begin to smell and rot. To stop this, food well need to be stored in a cold place near ice or snow blocks.
Frozen Foods:
Frozen food that has been in a fridge for a couple of days have to be re-heated in a furnace and the chance of the food to still be rotten after being re-heated is a 27% chance.
Eating Rotten Food:
The causes of eating bad food that has rotten well cause the player to loose health and send them into a trippy series of effects. (Zooming out/in, colors change, fainting.) The effects well grow and grow the more the player eats more rotten food.
To cure this, you have to find herbs. An alternative is to wait it out.
Herbs:
Herbs are uncommon plants that can be found in forests, but can be farmed like wheat.
Farming Herbs:
Farming herbs is the same way you would wheat, you hoe down grass and there is a 75% chance of herb seeds to spawn along with wheat seeds. Herbs grow the same, but dont look the same like wheat and are used to cure food poisoning, or other possible diseases...
Percentages of rottening:
Raw Meat: 20% Over a week.
Cooked Meat: 10% Over 2 weeks.
Raw Fish: 5% Over 4 days.
Cooked Fish: 10% Over a week.

So if you bathe in water does the water become dirty/give you a chance of contracting disease if you hang out in it?
Clarifying:
Bathing in water causes all of the bacteria and disease you collect while mining to shed off, but contaminating the water. Forcing you to find cleaner water.

The fridge is nothing like a modern fridge, all it is a snow covered chest with the lid open 24/7. A chest like this has to be underground next to stone to keep the snow cold and from melting but cannot be incased, or around torches. (Not including redstone torches.) The fridge slows down food from rottening by 30%.
While it's certainly interesting, I don't think it would be a necessary addition to Minecraft. (Unless Notch adds the realism slider that's been discussed, then that could certainly be an option.

The two major things to be worried about in survival: Food and Hygiene, without both you would wither away until your completely dead. So I dont see how its unnecessary.

It's just that I personally want to be able to keep Minecraft simple if I want, and as I said, if Notch adds the realism slider then this would be a perfect idea, but i'd rather not have a bunch of realism forced onto me. For example, I have one world where I just try to build an awesome little kingdom and one where I try to adventure. It would be a pain if in my construction one I had to constantly stop and get more food, cook it, etc. But in the adventure one that would add a challenge. So you can see why I would like it to be able to be changed.
Or you could surround a chest with snow blocks. That would give snow a use.
Also have food spoil faster in tropical conditions.
Makes sense, but would be quite hard for the people that dont spawn near a snow biome or in one of those rare winter levels.
And yes, any food/chest FULL of food on sand getting directly hit by the sun should have a higher chance of becoming rotten.
Ok, well have fish spoil faster, then meat, then bread (makes bread useless if it spoils quickly) And just have a dark, well ventilated room to store your food in until you can get some snow. Ice would also be a good cold-block if we can ever get it...grrr....
great idea! have the fridge as a single placeable block, and it would probably look something like a white chest, and maybe have some white smoke coming from it ( so it looks like the fog like stuff that happens when you open your freezer )
Our you could use redstone torches, they still stop mobs from spawning.
Depending on how big your room is though.

And yet, my criticism is falling heavily on the 'No' portion of the vote. Realism isn't stressed to heavily in an open sandbox game. There are plenty of logical flaws. I don't see the need to add in hygiene and food poisoning, especially when hunger has yet to be implemented.
And yet, its based on survival. This would only make more sense to the game, but yeah, there are logical flaws.

Doors, walls, and a roof are all necessary to keep your house clean and fresh from animal feces. :biggrin.gif:
