EDIT: Changed title, because I think stink bombs sounds better than slime bombs for this item.
You know those times when you're running from a mob of mobs after getting lost while exploring? Or if you're afraid to go outside your house because of those damn creepers camping outside? How about being able to make an item that distracts mobs in a pinch? I suggest: the slime bomb!
The slime bomb is a grenade that, when thrown, releases a stench that attracts enemy mobs within a 25-meter radius. It does give off an explosion, but does no structural damage and only 1 heart of damage in a 3x3 blast.
So, how do you craft it? Well, you need 3 ingredients: a slime ball (as the name suggests), glass, and gunpowder. Here's the crafting recipie ( = slime ball):
I was also thinking of this:
In any column of the grid.
For these, the bomb would look like the slime-stuff encased in a glass bottle.
ANOTHER SUGGESTION:

[] []
= 4 slimebombs
[] []
This would create a stack of 8 (for the top recipie) or 4 (for the bottom recipie and Snurr's suggestion). The bombs stack up to 64 (though that'll take some time to make).
To use, put the stack in your hand and right-click to throw the bomb in an arc (similar to an arrow). When it hits, the bomb will detonate and cause a visible green gas to emit from the square it hit for around 20-30 seconds. All mobs would turn and move towards the point of impact and ignore you. This could be used for escaping a group of angry mobs, or to lure them into traps.
I think that it would be just as good if you could just throw slime balls and have the effect you suggest (maybe without the 1 heart of damage, unless it actually hits someone)
What if you could hit a player or mob with a slimeball and have all the mobs attack them? I'd enjoy watching creepers attack chickens.

To your first point: I think slime balls should actually be crafted to do something... I mean, other mobs aren't attracted to attack slimes, are they?
To your second point:
I think that'd be hilarious.

That's true, but mixing slime with gunpowder and glass doesn't make much sense either. One could say, though, that they could be attracted to the gas you mentioned, which slimes themselves don't emit.
What about (diamonds is still symbolizing slime orbs):
[] []
= 4 slimebombs

And slimebombs would act like an arrow when you throw them. Creepers in a 15 blocks radius would go after the slime bomb instead of you and just selfdestruct when in gets to it, just like they do when they gets to you.
Edit: Replaced the gunpowder with flint since it doesn't actually explode and slime orbs are hard enough to get by themselves.
Would be kinda cool in a multiplayer wars mode-ish thing too! Get creeper go after you, run to other guys base and throw slimebomb

Like Boomerbile in l4d2? Hell, I would kill cows for the sake of them shutting up with these.

That could also work as a possible recipie. And yeah, SMP would be fun to use this in. Though, you'd have to define which stench the mobs go to with multiple bombs thrown...
I suppose it would be whichever stench is closest. And on the (rare) occasion where a mob is exactly in the middle of two stenches, it would be whichever one was thrown last (which would be easy to program--just have the mob calculate the stench area's duration value).

Perhaps you should check out this thread that has various proposed ideas for how to use slime.

I was intending for them to be attracted to the gas, and was actually thinking the gas would be visible (like its own block) where it hit.
I put glass in the recipie because I was thinking the bombs could look like some substance in a glass bottle, which you throw, and it breaks. I've edited my OP for more clarity.
