I like this idea. Glowstone blocks would be the best idea IMHO, because they are quite the opposite of dark obsidian.
A good solution to airships being an easy access to the Aether is the whale bladder thing: if the only way to make an airship is from materials from the Aether, they can't create them until they've been. Normally they can only be used for air travel in the Overworld, but if you do something special or other (Like replacing one piece with a diamond blcok?) then if you fly up high enough the sky will turn into a portal to the Aether. Or you could only fly from the overworld to the nether on the back of an Aerwhale (Taming them somehow?). But what happens if you fall or dive in an airship?
But my main problem is that in the Nether, there is also no day or night, just perpetual dim light which actually goes farther than usual, and can't go below 8 (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Light#The_Nether). In the Aether, I think that it should on the surface be like 17 degrees of light (or brighter), which makes it hard to see but the light decreases faster underground, like 30% instead of 20% or 10%.
I still think that an airship made with the block-grid entity system would work better than a portal. Airships are difficult to make, and would most likely require either a ghast flight bladder, balloon lizard balloons(My idea), or aerwhale bladders.
If the aether is made into a physical realm that actually is above the overworld, but in a different chunk area, then it would be MUCH easier to do the thing where you can fall out of aether, and would open up the possibilities of flying creatures from the aether coming down on occasion(this is what my balloon lizard does), which you could kill and use parts from them for balloons on your airship.
Its a good idea, but some of it is too complicated for minecraft, like the stone that you can't identify but has you fall through it to your death, and the over use of gold, and i wouldn't talk about enchanting in this since enchanting isn't even in the normal version, and you guys must remember that THIS IS NOTCH'S GAME, NOT YOURS. Just because you think something is cool and a good idea, doesn't mean Notch has to implement it. The guy's a millionaire, you people should be happy he works on minecraft at all!

The copycat materrial might be a little out-there, and even if it is implemented, I believe you should be able to avoid falling by sneaking.
Also, we aren't trying to force our ideas through, we're proposing different ideas and discussing it. Or we should be. Then welet Notch decide if and how he'll implement them.

Welcome to the suggestions section, wiseguy! Amazing things can happen if you think before you post, newbie. I'm on a horse.
i don't know if this is already been said, but you should get to the Aether by digging through the ceiling of the nether (which should be really high up).

nahh... sounds a bit weird/stupid but any way the original thought out way to get there was to get lots and lots of glowstone dust (make it into blocks) then make a portal like how you get to the Nether (same size/"configuration")
then place water in it...
maybe read the first page...

like my avatar? it's pretty cool huh? you want it don't you? because it's better than yours...
well... TOO BAD!
This concept of Aether doesn't agree with me. If you want floating islands in the sky, that kinda already happens. Not intentionally, but it does happen. However, if you meant it was an extension to the "ceiling" of MC then I'm all for it.
I also don't like the "cold" look you are giving the Aether. I like seeing lots of "green" in my worlds. If these floating islands were more like the floating mountains of Pandora(Avatar reference) I would be a happy camper. :happy.gif:
I don't see any reason for the days to be any brighter than normal. That is unless it is to counter the shade the islands would put on the surface of MC.

Why does everyone bring that up? The Aether is cold because the realm is cold. Why would it change just so it can be ripped right of of Avatar.
Avatar, BTW, was a good movie, but all the people are like "OMG James Cameron's Avatarz is so awesomes because it has all the specail affects lol". The special effects are just as good as any other modern mainstream movie. And the script is just Pochahontas with character and location changes. The vehicles are ripped from Halo Wars and Alien. Nothing original.
Well, Aliens was made by James Cameron, and apparently the Halo style of vehicles was inspired by James Cameron's stuff or something (can't fully remember it).
The reason why "The Nether" was changed to the name it was today because he [ Notch ] does not want to religiously orient Minecraft to one religion. Formerly it was named "Hell" or "The Slip".
Aether is like you said "Heavenly" but the problem is that its pointless and adds to the stupidity of the situation. Earth is the opposite of The Nether. The Nether is supposed to be NOTHING as in No Life and fire everywhere. Earth is supposed to be EVERYTHING as in Life and water and nature everywhere. Aether would be pointless and add on to the game's already growing file.
Notch should spend more time on usable objects like Conveyors or Lanterns. Or even the possible Cake. Not silly places for you to go. If you want such a place in the sky so badly, use a map generator that generates floating islands. I am sure there are many of them.
Will there ... Be a Aether portal? For the god sake. = Iron blocks.
No! Thats not the crafting grid you just build it like nether portal. Ok: There is a suggestion for it.

Too easy, it's almost certainly going to be glowstone.

Notch said specifically he is not orienting minecraft towards any religion thus the Aether will NEVER HAPPEN.

Hold on, I'm gonna let you finish, but you must realize that this is 1) A suggestion and 2) is hardly like Heaven. This place has no angels, purity, safeness, streets of gold, gates of pearl, etc. It's simply a realm where there is no night, is cold, has floating islands, ancient ruins, and mobs that don't do damage directly. The Nether is more like H-E-Double Hockeysticks than the Aether is like Heaven. You may continue with your futile rant.
A flying creature that resembles a skeleton, except cheerful. It shoots flaming arrows that sets you on fire. It will only attack you if you attack it or one of the other ones around it.
It will be a lighter shade of gray than skeletons, and will wear a white robe with gold colored trim. It will have white wings that if hit, will fall off and can be picked up by the player.
They will generally appear in groups of 2-4, and will drop "Lightstone Bows" if killed. The bow will quickly shoot flaming arrows if used by the player. They will giggle if approached.
If they hit water, they cannot use their wings until they get at least 1 block away from the water (so they can dry off).
TLDR: Basically a flying white Skeleton in a robe that shoots flaming arrows. The Zombie Pigmen of the Aether.
EDIT: Also, not a rip off of an angel. Just a merger of Ghasts, Zombie Pigmen, and Skeletons.

I don't know. It depends on whether mobs slow you down or not when you touch them.
