I'm sure many users have, such as myself, have been constantly frustrated when we dig through a nice-looking quarry, only to find not a single bit of ore after fifteen minutes of digging. Well, what if Minecraft had a tool to help you find ores? I was thinking that dowsing rods would be an interesting tool to implement in Minecraft, and figured it should be made out of gold, since gold has no other use as of yet. The grid could look like this:

I'm still wondering how it would work, exactly, though. Should it differentiate between metals? How sensitive should it be? (I was thinking 20-30 meters)
Thoughts?

where is the ore/material you want
and it would beep faster as you close to the ore with a 15m max range if there is more than 1 block then it only tells you where the closest one is, if there is more than 1 adjacent it would beep more acute

I was thinking more of a movement/visual effect than an audial effect, since dowsing rods aren't electronic (although maybe a bell-like vibration sound could work). But yes, having specific dowsing rods would be useful. Of course, I think it might be better to have it be a general sensor, so you can't just make a beeline stright for the nearest diamond. Or, as others suggested, have it detect something that would indicate ores, like underground water systems.
I like your idea of dungeon/lava/clay finder, first one to suggest that, I think.
Look at psychic powers, giant robots, and various Cryptozoological creatures.
