I like this li'l guy, he's cute and the "hiding as a normal block" thing that has been suggested for numerous other mobs doesn't feel at all contrived here.
This is a great idea, but the thing is octopi don't have ink. That's squids you're thinking of. It's probably excusable, though, since this guy look so suited to MC, and the ink thing seems like a nice ability for a non-hostile mod, though maybe it'll have some special drops to make attacking them useful?

I used 3D Studio Max 2010. I'm a self taught 3d designer and an aspiring video game maker. Glad you like it!

Actually, most varieties of octopods have ink sacs. The invisible octopus is one of them. Check out the youtube video I posted in the main post. It shows the octopus dash off after being discovered, clearly leaving behind a cloud of ink. They're pretty versatile. Yeah I like the ink as a non-hostile ability too. I also think dropping ink when killed (or milked) could be a good drop if something like paint or dye ever comes into play (which it totally should).
Thanks for the comments guys! Keep them up, they are the source of my power! Mwahahahahaha...cough erm hehe... heh. Hrm.
I think a bucket would be ideal to harvest ink with. Then you craft the bucket of ink and a feather (and maybe a stick) together to make a pen. Then you use the pen on a bookcase to write a novel of your adventures.
Environment: Aquatic AI: Non-Hostile, attempts to flee when attacked and squirts cloud of ink that cannot be seen through (perhaps a four block area around the octopus) Drop: Ink (Possibly gathered with bucket) Misc: Rarer natural spawn. Found in isolation.
I imagine this creature being a non-hostile mob, obviously aquatic, probably rare and even rarer to find several in the same place. They could drop ink, which could be used for all kinds of things *cough*cartography*cough.*
Plus, they're damned cute!
Comments welcome.
Variant:Giant Octopus
Environment: Aquatic AI: Hostile, Territorial. Perhaps if it gets too low on health, it will attempt to flee with a similar ink method as the normal octopus. Drop: Ink (Possibly gathered with bucket) Misc: Rarer natural spawn. Found in isolation.
Whipped this bad boy up with a simple geometry and texture change. Lemme know what you guys think. Hopefully it will appease those looking for a more dangerous aquatic foe.
Variant:Invisible Octopus
Environment: Aquatic AI: Non-Hostile, remains hidden disguised as a block of material until attacked. Which point it flees some distance and assumes another disguise. Drop: Omni-Ink (Possibly gathered with bucket), ink that can assume the color of any other object it is paired with (could be an extremely rare, but good way to get varying ink colors that usually require crushing up a bunch of a material) Misc: Extremely rare. Found in isolation.
This guy can land on a block, be it sand, rock, dirt or whatever, and turn into a copy of that block with little eyes. At which point it just sits there stationary. If you inadvertently try to mine the "octo-block," the mob freaks out and rapidly turns back into it's natural form and speeds off, startling the player to hell and back.
Marvel at my illustration!
Got inspiration for this variant from this video
Another idea for a mob. A "Squid". Squids would be non-hostile however they're annoying cause instead of dealing you damage, Squids will hold on to you and drag you down to the bottom of the water for you to drown and wont let you go. To stop them simply attack them a couple of times till they let you go and flee. Loot they give off is calamari and prob other things.
