Just wanted a place for people to make suggestions for what we could use gold to make.
I'll kick us off with:
Decorative statues
fancy indoor light sources (candlesticks/chandelier/lantern)
magic use tools a la runecraft
the upcoming watch (woohoo)
pretty door/gates?
its a rare and valuable metal used for currency, if the game ever gets far enough for NPC trading, this could be very important for that. But I think it won't, so I find gold would be good for light reflection. If the gold block reflected light it would be great.
We would also need a

This would reflect at 90 degree angles whereas the normal block would just reflect it in a general dispersment. This way we can take sunlight or lamp light, and shoot it around corridors and into a room at a gold block to illuminate a room without needing lamps at all. Also good for death rays to kill mobs.

So you say 1.4 is fail because you don't know how to update your server? WTF
Thats like saying all cars fail because you don't know how to put gas in them.
Well, gold is known for its being very soft, yet durable.
Hm...
Maybe we could have a grappling hook, with a golden rod?
Gold isn't durable. Metals are so useful as tools because they're often malleable (Relatively easy to shape) when heated, and are very hard. Gold's heaviness and softness make it impossible to use for tools in reality. If you tried to make a rod of solid 24k ( Pure ) gold, it would probably start bending just from it's own weight. And even if it didn't, the weight alone would make it extremely unwieldy as a tool. There would be no reason at all to have to make a grappling hook out of gold then any other metal. Gold was and is valuable because it looks nice and is very rare, not because it's really useful for anything.
I really like the idea of being able to guild furniture/blocks/armor etc.
Also, I've read that Notch will implement coins craftable from gold ingots for, if nothing else, player to player trading in SMP.

Notch has stated that gold will play a major role in magic. He wants it to be some sort of magic-friendly metal, as in, gold stuff is easier to enchant.

Also you should be able to use it to gold plate other tools and armor and such to get gold items with the durability of the original material.

Either way, definitely seconding the statue suggestion! I'd like to see more decorative items to spice up our builds.

It would be awesome if Notch put this in. =D
