Was coming online to post exactly the same thought as the OP, but have been severely beaten to it.
Some sort of system where you can change once every game year, or craft a new spawn out of severely rare items such as 128 gold or something would be a nice trade-off.
Not really. There currently is no "game year" and even if there were, what if I wanted to move my base on a day-to-day basis? And what if I start in a bad area, and I do not want to wait until I have 128 gold to make my permenant base?

By balance, do you mean make it totally worthless?
But, as has been discussed for a long time in this thread, people shouldn't have to become rich in order to go exploring. It should be an option early in the game. As it has been discussed, why should one have to build on develop the area he hates instead of exploring and finding a suitable area for living?
And walking back to your base should not be the penalty for dying, it should be losing your items. Perhaps if you are quick, you can run down to your mine and save them, having a time of extreme rush and blood pressure,

to help stop bed spamming, you could make it so beds cannot be placed near an area mobs can spawn, like near a mob spawner, or in a cave that is not well lit
People, this really is not a problem.
Minecraft allows you choose how to play.
If a play doesn't want to change his/her spawn, he/she doesn't change, and vice versa.
Althought, i still support this, + 1 for you.
Because he didn't?
