Plenty of us have played capture the flag in real life as well as in various games -- primarily shooters. What makes it so interesting in Minecraft is the context; particularly the fact that we can personally construct our bases.
CTF Mode would be played in rounds. Before the beginning of a round, players can choose either of two teams or they may opt to be randomly assigned a team (or spectate if they so choose). After teams are selected, a finite random map is generated. The teams would be placed on a medium-sized island somewhere in the range of 500-1000 blocks in approximate diameter. Each team would begin on an opposite side of the island next to their team's flag.
For the first 20 minutes of the game, PvP would be disabled. Players in a team would have to work together to build a base around their flag. At the end of those 20 minutes, PvP is enabled. At this point, players may choose to continue constructing their base or they may attempt to steal the other team's flag. Once a team's flag has been taken, the round ends.
- Each team's flag would be placed on a piece of bedrock. Players on a team would not be able to pick up their own flag.
- Arrows on the HUD would point players to each team's flag. No hiding your flag in a cave at the bottom of the map.
- Players would be allowed to join in the middle of the game.
- An auto-balance feature would prevent players from all joining the same team; equal sides would be required.
- The map is finite and is all generated simultaneously. No chunk generation mid-game.
- When you've picked up the enemy flag, you move 10% slower and hold the flag in your hand. Switching to another item or pressing Q drops the flag. When the flag is dropped, enemy players can stand next to it to activate a countdown timer that returns it to their base.
- You still drop everything you're carrying when you die, including the flag.
What are your thoughts? Think it would be fun? I do.
Sounds like fun, but I think the first 20 minutes would get boring. Plus, you would have people designing some crazy (frustrating) ways to hide their flag. I think in the interest of balance, it would be better to get a group of people to design good maps for CTF.
But, if you get a group of like-minded players together, perhaps that whole setup could be fun, even with the 20 minutes of building. You would have to have safeguards in place to prevent griefers and such though.
Would you just fight each other off from bases, with weapons? All kinds of traps included (mines, TNT, etc)?

I doubt that... Minecraft is already fun without capturing flags and pvp. I doubt people would get bored during the 20-minute setup period. If necessary, the time limit could be lowered.

With arrows pointing toward each flag, there's no such thing as hiding. Plus, teams can't move their own flag or the block below it (because it's bedrock).

Yeah, griefing could be a problem, potentially even more so than SMP. However, I tend to find that in goal-oriented games, people tend to get bored of team killing/griefing quickly. Playing the game is usually more fun.
Also, votekick.

A gamemode implies that it would be used in both single player and multiplayer, I suggest if this were to happen something else gets added to singleplayer.
That upsets the general balance.
Also, you may not have realized this, but all of what you are suggesting can easily be accomplished with some simple redstone wiring and creative building, perhaps even a referee to start the match. i.e, (provided you are using the snapshots or when the new update comes out) a command block that enables PVP (either by a ref or a long, long timer), a map designed before hand, and basically an honor system where no one griefs (or even simpler, adventure mode). Of course, you run into trouble with the flag pickup. Again, redstone wiring can solve this.
Otherwise get someone to design a plugin for you. I hate to be a downer, but a whole new gamemode? That is just a tad absurd.
What is the IP to this server? I would like to join
I actually know a server like this.
You even get to choose your classes like Soldier, Archer, Heavy and several others.
When your archer, you can even get headshots.
You go on a randomized team, and each round theres a randomly generated map.
So yeah, basically a COD Minecraft integration.

But I fully support CTF being a multiplayer game mode for the vanilla Minecraft.
I know there are a lot of plugins to do this, but it would be very cool if Mojang implemented this. Maybe instead of an arrow pointing to the flag a compass does? Also, would you start out with weapons, or do you have to make your own?
As I think about this idea, I realize two big things about this idea: Adventure mode seems to fit CTF more than a CTF gamemode, and maps would have to be either player made, or Mojang would have to make the maps. Now, these two things about CTF out there, a CTF gamemode would not be the best thing, and people make this without needing a gamemode.
CTF would be a great addition as it would challenge players to build bigger better defense structures.
I don’t think the 20 min prep period would be necessary. The distance between the team spawns should provide plenty of prep time.
Also, a team should have the ability to move its flag, but be limited as to where it can be placed.
Speaking of CTF in Minecraft, I believe Mojang had already taken it into consideration (http://www.minecraft...apture_the_Flag) it's not exactly 100% confirmed in some sense, but it was still taken into consideration nonetheless. On another note, there's a map made by OfficialChunkyCraft that's based off of 2fort from Team Fortress 2. It has a working redstone system with a scoreboard and everything, so it's still possible to have CTF without the need of a new gamemode. You would just need to manage it with protection plugins or use adventure mode.

Yes. That's exactly how it would work.

Its a suggestion, not a server.
I support, by the way!

Sorry for my lack of support.

Not only is this a feature that was confirmed to be in the game, but it was confirmed 3 years ago. Check THIS for more information.
From what I heard, it may be for the XBox 360 version before it gets to PC.
