Strange, I thought biome 35 was Savanna. Mesa should be 37. I may vaguely recall a past discussion about this being a bug when the biome number gets over a certain number.
I don't think you can choose the sub biome types for a singe biome customized world.
[edit]
Okay found the bug. Apparently any biome number over 9 you need to subtract 2 because the Nether and End biomes are not valid selections and are thus skipped in the numbering sequence.
How is this overpowered? The only thing that might be seen as such is the increase in dungeon count to 100, and that only makes them about 5 times more common than they were back in 1.6.4 (since then they doubled the y-range they generate over, with nearly all dungeons still generating below normal sea level even in worlds with deeper ground, and caves are less common), and offset a lack of easy-to-find villages or temples (I believe that you don't get the deserts that border mesas in an all-mesa world?). They even made it harder to find gold ore in deeper caves (caves are more common near bedrock, somewhat offset by surface mineshafts) by increasing the max to 100, while mesas already have 20 veins of gold between layers 32-79; if you want the same density of gold ore over the entire range from 0-79 you'd want to increase the count of normal gold from 2 to 13 (a total of 33 veins per chunk, making it 1.33 times more common than iron within the latter's range and 1.65 times in chunks that are stone up to y=79), and more gold won't really help you that much unless you want to build with gold blocks (Notch apples are no longer craftable, and besides, you could make a gold farm, probably one reason why they removed their crafting recipe).
It is always interesting to read the comments on bug reports and see fixes, or at least work-arounds, that were posted months - or even years - ago which have been completely ignored by Mojang. I've even used them to fix bugs that weren't fixed by Mojang until many versions later, if at all.

What I meant was that the ocean was all lava, but maybe I misused the word overpowered XD
I meant to say that the terrain was a bit... harsh, to say the least

Thanks for the feedback! And yes, this terrain is very extreme >:) I also played with my friend on this map a bit, and it is *possible* just very difficult xD we got to the nether and then died and raged
Edit: so to fix the bug I have to add two to my biome number? It doesn't seem to work for me.

No, any biome number over 9 you need to subtract 2 because the nether and end biomes which are normally biome 8 and 9 are not valid biomes in the customized world options and so are skipped in the numbering sequence. http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Biome#Biome_IDs
I was trying to make really hard to survive in terrain, and this is what I came up with
{"coordinateScale":684.412,"heightScale":684.412,"lowerLimitScale":512.0,"upperLimitScale":512.0,"depthNoiseScaleX":200.0,"depthNoiseScaleZ":200.0,"depthNoiseScaleExponent":0.5,"mainNoiseScaleX":80.0,"mainNoiseScaleY":160.0,"mainNoiseScaleZ":80.0,"baseSize":8.5,"stretchY":12.0,"biomeDepthWeight":1.0,"biomeDepthOffset":0.0,"biomeScaleWeight":1.0,"biomeScaleOffset":0.0,"seaLevel":67,"useCaves":true,"useDungeons":true,"dungeonChance":100,"useStrongholds":true,"useVillages":true,"useMineShafts":true,"useTemples":true,"useMonuments":true,"useRavines":true,"useWaterLakes":false,"waterLakeChance":1,"useLavaLakes":true,"lavaLakeChance":10,"useLavaOceans":true,"fixedBiome":35,"biomeSize":1,"riverSize":1,"dirtSize":33,"dirtCount":10,"dirtMinHeight":0,"dirtMaxHeight":256,"gravelSize":33,"gravelCount":20,"gravelMinHeight":0,"gravelMaxHeight":256,"graniteSize":33,"graniteCount":40,"graniteMinHeight":0,"graniteMaxHeight":255,"dioriteSize":33,"dioriteCount":2,"dioriteMinHeight":0,"dioriteMaxHeight":80,"andesiteSize":33,"andesiteCount":4,"andesiteMinHeight":0,"andesiteMaxHeight":80,"coalSize":17,"coalCount":20,"coalMinHeight":0,"coalMaxHeight":128,"ironSize":9,"ironCount":20,"ironMinHeight":0,"ironMaxHeight":64,"goldSize":9,"goldCount":2,"goldMinHeight":0,"goldMaxHeight":100,"redstoneSize":8,"redstoneCount":8,"redstoneMinHeight":0,"redstoneMaxHeight":16,"diamondSize":8,"diamondCount":1,"diamondMinHeight":0,"diamondMaxHeight":16,"lapisSize":7,"lapisCount":1,"lapisCenterHeight":16,"lapisSpread":16}
NOTE:
For some reason it changes the biome, it should be Mesa only
Generate world in Creative so you don't die xD place your first tree.
Heh. Possibly a bit overpowered, but pretty neat!

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Amazing! I will have to try this out soon!
