message to all i am making a surv map and would like some ideas
I don't know if you have heard of the planetoids map, but that's a pretty awesome seed that was originally created for alpha. It has thousands of planets made of materials with different materials inside. Also, maybe you could just try to make one with loads of sky islands.

I don't know about anyone else but after swimming up from the ocean floor, I looked around, the island with the tree was visible from my starting location with render distance set at "normal". That's a default setting for me. I therefore naturally headed straight for it.
This seed looks pretty interesting, anyone know of any tutorials that teach people how to survive when the seed generator gives them an ocean biome start? Most of the time a treeless location start simply means swim around until you find something to start with.
I also think there should be some tutorials on how to survive at the most basic levels, starting off with how to turn that treeless starting island into a mob farm to get rotting flesh off zombies and bonemeal off skeletons for when you do finally find a tree to harvest. Most people have been too used to having their character stuck right next to a nice viable starting location with everything set up for them and don't even know what to do when this map type comes up!
I made a minor edit to your quoted text to take out the video and pic links, hope you don't mind.
Edit and addendum: I tried this map in 'normal' mode after planting the saplings dropped from the single tree to see if I could battle some monsters for their drops, and I got killed by a skeleton and respawned on an island (possibly a mainland or large island) with trees! It seems that there is some code in Minecraft that will randomly reset your spawn point if you die, so beware! You may not wind up at the spawn point you originally started at!

Tutorial
I have 60 points so far, but I haven't found a dungeon, found diamond, or made a portal. But I wonder, why would finding diamond be worth more points then making a portal?
