So.. i have this one of my fav seed from like 3-4 yrs back. So wondering if it would be ok to use... as in will the seeds upgrade with all the new stuff that has been added into the game over time? (p.s these days every world i create, starts of on a island or some isolated water place. what's up with that?)
Another question. I have my saved world from 3-4 yrs back, can i play that world with the latest update? or will the update cause problem to the old saved world?
Seeds do not have any dependency on a particular version; the game uses whatever the current world generation algorithm is, as seen by using the seed "-123775873255737467" in 1.6.4 and 1.12.2; only a few features match (for the most part any seed for 1.7.2-1.12.2 will produce the same world since that is the last time they made a major update to world generation but older versions will be missing newer features; likewise, seeds for 1.6.4 will work as far back as 1.2.1 with minor changes):
As for the second question, yes, you can play an older world in newer versions - it is only downgrading that is not supported (and will seriously corrupt the world). You'll also get all newer featured but only in areas which were not previously generated, with the exception of ocean monuments (if the chunks were not loaded for more than a few minutes). However, if it was created prior to 1.7.2 you'll get sudden discontinuities in terrain and biomes when you enter newly generated areas (like this example). It is possible to mostly smooth out changes though with MCMerge (note - I do not know if it is compatible with the latest version; the version history last mentions 1.8 but somebody mentioned that it worked with a modded world).

So what's the best way to maintain your save files? Update minecraft and open the world every time you update minecraft? The problem is when the update gap is too much? like few major updates? Like jumping from update version 1 to 10 directly not updating 2-9?

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
