Since the original poster of this thread is running Minecraft on a PS3 and I only really know the PC versions, I don't know how much of what follows is relevant.
Short answer: A world seed (as opposed to a wheat seed) is a number that tells the Minecraft world generator how to make the world map of biomes, what shape to make the world's surface, and where to create all the structures, trees, plants, caves, and ores.
On PC Minecraft, that runs in Java, you can enter any number into the seed input box between -9,223,372,036,854,775,808 and 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 (without the commas). So nearly any 19 digit number can be entered be it positive or negative.
If you enter anything in the seed entry box that the program doesn't see as a number the program will send that text string to a Java routine called hashcode() which will use a special math algorithm to convert that string into a number and that number will be used as the world seed.
Note: accidentally entering a number with an invisible space character before or after it will trigger this action and you won't the the world you expected.
That's why it's a good idea to use the "/seed" command to display the actual world seed while in your world to make sure that the seed being used is the one you entered.

How do I seed?
Seeds are randomly generated numbers based on your computer's date and time for a world.
Thank you
If you want a non random seed, like one somebody posted in the forum, you enter it under "More World Options" when you create a new world.
Just testing.
Seeds are basically addresses that allow you to recreate a good world.
A VERY basic answer to your question is posted in the first post of the FAQ thread of this forum:
