EDIT: due to popular demand here is the save file http://www.mediafire.com/?8r99y8a8zz92en7 You must have piston mod installed and working or it will crash. Since the mod doesnt yet work with 1.4_01 that means you will probably need 1.4
If you ever get tired of creepers exploding your house, here is your solution. I managed to use the piston mod create a dual cobblestone generator which then feeds into a self building house mechanism, over all this took around 8 hours of work.
Here is a description of how it works.
The core part of this is a 5 repeater clock that provides constant timing for everything. From there it goes into a piston that is separating lava and water, when the piston is retracted lava meets water creating cobble. It then pushes the cobble forward, and the cycle repeats creating a single 16 block long line of cobble.
Next there is the pistons on each corner that form the single cobble line into a square, each piston is delayed by 4 more ticks then the previous one. Then there is all the pistons arranged in a square pointing up, these push the square cobblestone stream up until it is 16 high, at which it no longer pushes and the piston beside it begins to build up.
Finally there is the two rows of pistons on side of building, these push the cobble walls forward, creating the roof and one floor inside.
Without a doubt the hardest part about this is timing everything right, get something off by even one tick and the piston will end up breaking itself by triggering at the same time as another. Also, for example if the ones that push up the cobble trigger while the corner square piston is activated, the cobble will be destroyed at that spot.
I saw some of the few other self building houses and i saw a huge problem with most, there was obsidian EVERYWHERE, due to the way they tried to build it, i made sure to use as little obsidian as possible, the only peices are for the skylights, which are completely optional, and the 2 corner and 1 cobble generator obsidian, which are a must.
If there is enough interest in this video/creation i will make a fully detailed tutorial video, where the redstone will be MUCH MUCH more organized than it is in this one, as this was simply trial and error.
Holy ****.... Major Epicness. I really hope Pistons become an actual feature in Minecraft because I haven't had much luck with getting mods to work properly recently.

I sooooo hope it becomes legit to, this mod still has tons of problems, mainly pistons can break so easily if they cross path of another or anything like that. A official mod would almost certainly be much more reliable and flexible.
you can cunsruct a whole city using this idea. But what happens when you have ti remove the redstone contraption to move on to another building, you just leave it there for repair?
Build a three story house with only one lava and one water... and at least two stacks of pistons, hundreds of various redstone utilities, hours of time, a good deal of various non-specific building materials, extensive knowledge of the quirks of redstone circuitry and piston operation, serious dedication...
But it's self repairing too, if you wait long enough. I'd personally recommend having enough blocks of it underground that it's not instantly identifiable and breakable, and perhaps have a seperate cobble generator at each corner (Removes the issues with getting the corners right and makes the repairs faster).

But overall, this makes creepers sad
Every single redstone piece and other things could be easily moved underground, completely hidden. Uptop you would see nothing but the square of pistons on the ground.
As this was completely not thought out and built piece by piece, its horribly messy, but nonetheless it works.
Also building a reserve chamber of blocks would be extremely easy, for instance you could fill a big empty square with sand and it would use the sand blocks to construct/repair the house at a much faster rate then you can with just a cobble generator.
In real life, fish are cursed with the fact that it will never rain for them. In minecraft, they can now live out their fantasies. Notch has a heart for his fish brethren.
Wow. Incredible. My jaw started dropping when I saw the house being built. Then it simply fell off once the house started to repair itself.
In my opinion, this isn't the most efficient idea for house building. Especially not in servers - yes, they'll grief your house, but if they're any smarter than a lump of mold, they'll get rid of the redstone too. But maybe if you hide the wiring deep enough underground? And perhaps if the pistons were really deep instead of at ground level?
In any case, this is still an AWESOME vid and idea. I always admire people who can figure out neat ways of playing around with the tools at our disposal.

The only thing worse than Creepers? Zombie Creepers. After exploding, they come back from the dead to explode again. And again. And again.

It has already been stated that pistons will be in 1.5.

here, diamonds for you.
none atm.

I'm asking you, as a friend... Just...put an end to me.

This is amazing.
Wow.
