Is there a way for someone to do the setblock command by spawning a container (chest, dropper, etc.) with custom names (that show inside, like Cool Items instead of Chest, like when you rename with anvils)? Just wondering.

I thought he meant an actual item like a stick with an image and all >.<
On that topic, for those using the updated command system for 1.14, that is now possible! Search the Minecraft Wiki for "CutomModelData" (will require a resource pack, just remember)
The new method is different in a way, in the fact as it supports various text elements such as color and formatting code, and allows for spaces (notice the extra ' characters, known as single quotes, or sometimes apostrophes).
You can see how this works in-game by doing /data get block X Y Z and seeing a bunch of things, such as items, the items' nbt data, type of block, and location (just coordinates; if you're on a server, it might also show dimension and world; not sure, have not tested)

BECAUSE I DIDN'T!
If you want to display an item instead of "chest" then the answer is no. You can not do that at the moment.
Yes you can:
Projects:
Cool Welcome Message using Unicode for Map Makers and Server Owners.
Q-Lock for adventure mappers that dont want their players to lose valuble items.
minecraft:command_block One-Command: Terrain Tools for adventure mappers that want to shape their world without using external tools.
Thanks!

For anyone browsing this thread, using versions 1.13 and up, this is the new syntax:
