Is there a way in which you could do this with a named item? Like for example, use the testfor commands and everything, but the explosion would be caused by a named hoe.
You could check if the hoe the player is holding is named yes.

I believe there is a way to do it using Armor stands, which involves you switching your item with the armor stand which is holding the same item which then triggers something, I may be wrong.

hey can you give me a screenshot of what the circuit in the first step looks like because i don't really know how comparators work thus i don't know what a comparator clock looks like
It's possible, though I'm not an expert with commands (hence my finding this thread). I believe swords can be detected, due to their original blocking function, bows can be detected, and all types of food can be detected. You'll have to find a list of all the possible items, but almost anything with right-click functionality is detectable using the scoreboard tag "stat.useItem.minecraft.{item name}[data tag]" I'll have to do some testing when I get a chance, and I may very well be wrong about this.
