I made a brillant discovery (Many of you might know ) I had another shot with the simple piston-sticky (the one with a bunch of levers) I need to know how to upload video's to show but anyway i will keep improving it
I've found a SMP server glitch that sometimes causes boats to float in the air. Basically, when you push the boat off a ledge sometimes it forgets to fall down and instead just sails through the air. It even gives off water particles while it's flying.
The strange thing is that the boat clearly isn't where it seems to be, because after a few seconds the boat will vanish and reappear on the ledge, then sail off again. It's as if the boat is stuck in a short time loop.
What's neat is that the flying boat is intangible to blocks, and can sail right through a mountain, but still solid to players. So you can actually walk on top of this weird glitched boat while it travels, and can actually go pretty far this way, but you'll fall down when the boat vanishes and returns to its starting point.
The flying boat is definitely lag based, and will likely get you nowhere. I.e., the boat looks like it is traveling, but it really isn't moving server-side, and thus trying to "ride" it will drop you to your death.
I can know this for quite certain, as the boat clock will continue going up and down, even while the boat is sailing through the air.

I found the same thing just recently while on an SMP server. The only problem is, this isn't a viable method of air travel due to the boat returning to its original position shortly after taking off. I can't see any other way to use this in addition to other methods for on demand and constant air travel.
Just a thought: arrows can collide with invisible stairs, and boats, in turn, can collide with arrows.
Although this is not technically free-floating, from a distance both the stairs and arrows are invisible, giving the appearance of (painfully slow) flight. :smile.gif:
Do note that I haven't tested this, and that the positioning of the arrows may prove quite tricky.

It's true that you'll fall before too long. However I was able to walk a short distance on the boat while it moved before that occurred. So even though the boat floor isn't actually there, you can still use it as a solid surface.
The problem then is that it vanishes eventually and sends you plummeting to your doom. But what if you had many lagged phantom boats floating along the same path? Would they overlap? Maybe we could form a solid floating landmass of phantom boats with so many that when one vanishes you're guaranteed to still have another one below you.
This wouldn't be an infinitely flying machine, but more like a projected solid hologram of a flying boat you can walk on, that can't get too far from the projector (the projector in this case being the boat's actual position).
It would probably work, except that this is basically just a flymod, since the "flying" client-side.
You gonna get baaaaaaaaaaaaanned. xD
Still, it would be cool to see a telescoping version.
I imagine a bunch of boats on a series of towers in a row. You give each boat a push in the same direction, and they all go coasting off through the sky in a time loop.
@TheMightyAnonym: Maybe this seems egoist, but could you please mention my battle ship with the detachable shuttle on the start page? I´m very proud of it, and it would be a big honor! But you´re the boss here, you don´t have to do it! :smile.gif:

Whoops, missed your post; added~! :biggrin.gif:

Then you walk about this moving bridge.
If you could keep them lined up, that would be a pretty cool effect.

what? that article separates radio waves and light! they are the same thing
the last one at least
Probably because it was a specific frequency?

I've noticed that my little elevator can use lever to move faster, and can move another inchworm diagonally upward on the west side. (put it 2 block upward to be sure it work)
There's no descending system for now, so it's kinda dangerous.

WOAH! I also noticed that pistons can inch along when recieving signal from spammed levers but, I was wasting my time getting them to go sideways when I should have been using them as an elevator! You sir win.
Free-floating practical vertical transportation in vanilla survival has been realized!!! :biggrin.gif:
Okay , My Idead is fairly stupid and It has multiple flaws but whatever. Think of the design in which you had the line of dirt blocks with levers on them well i thought of having not just a single pair of pistons (Sticky and Normal) but instead 2 or even 3 but like I said It Has many Flaws

Yeah, I'm not getting it to work either. Checked the orientation ("hmm, stars are going that way, must be west") and the piston order (normal on the bottom, duh).

Can you get the horizonal one to work? I have operated both the horizantal and vertical engines. Both of them work on the same principal. I have gotten the best results by triple clicking when the sticky piston is retracted. Too fast or too slow will cause an engine misfire. It does work, but it relies on a BUD glitch (I think) so it is tempermental.
