I have a design challenge for all of you redstone experts- a fully functional 6 color Rubik's cube. But that's not all; this Rubik's cube needs to be fully resettable with the press of a button, with a different random output every time.
The basic Rubik's cube shouldn't be a challenge. For the scrambling mechanism, you could perhaps use a series of detector rails being moved by pistons, randomizing the output of the scramble. These pistons would alter every time you activate the mechanism, so you would receive different results.
Good luck, and if you can, be detailed on how to recreate the resulting machine! I'm going to give this a shot myself, but I don't expect a good result. Ideas are my strong suit, execution of these ideas is lacking.
It's been done before. On 2 occasions by 2 different people, if I remember correctly. It would just take a little modification to add some randomized logic to scramble the cube.
With vanilla Minecraft, it's probably almost impossible, and if it was, there would be major lag! However, with a mod like redpower, this may be possible!
I can tell you for a fact that this is not impossible. If you've seen the redstone contraptions in the map "The Tourist" you would know that this is nowhere near impossible. Difficult maybe, impossible, no.
I've broken down what we need into three parts:
1. A fully operational life-like Rubik's cube
2. A randomizer capable of creating hundreds of different puzzle scrambles, with a different output every time.
3. A convenient interface, allowing a player to easily view, move around, and control the Rubik's cube.

I've been a Minecraft player since Beta 1.7, still my favorite game!

I have been working on a rubiks cube i got the tape part done all i have to do is remote activation and i am done it's size is 120x120 and was made using piston tape loops then i copied and pasted it in mcedit and all i had to do was a randomizer using sethbling's random pulse generator.there is little visble redstone maybe 20 pieces it uses like 10 000 though so it is pretty good.
I was thinking about this a long time ago and had come a conclusion myself that I couldn't do it. Seeing as Keeperofpie says one already exists, links?
I guess in the confines of my redstone mind, there is a noob patch. Can someone explain how you make a rubik's cube in minecraft? Do you just use pistons to rotate the faces?

I always wanted to argue with a brick wall, I suppose the internet is the second best option.
Indeed. I built a functioning cube almost a year ago response to a challenge. I never got around to adding a randomizer although it wouldn't be hard to do. A solver however would be extremely difficult to build.
That's the general idea, yes. Piston tapes.
But since there haven't been anyone to take on the challenge, we can conclude that you can't make an effective rubik's cube in minecraft.
I was the second person to make the cube, but it's proven to be unreliable, so I wouldn't suggest using my cube for this.

Contains Pachebel's Canon made with noteblocks, a working Rubik's cube made with pistons, and the ultimate TNT cannon.

It's a computer after all, nothing is truly random.
Well, obviously it would eventually duplicate an output. What I meant is that I don't want the scrambler to make the same set of movements every time.
And I spelled Rubik's Cube wrong. Sue me.

Can you give me videos/screenshots/downloads of these?
If we have that, all we need to add is the interface and the randomizer.
