Could someone make a tutorial on how to build it step by step, I've tried and it's failed to work. Thanks.
Yeah I made a video where I walk through it, build it and give an explanation to how it works with respect to the data values. You can include it in the OP if you want as a tutorial Spanone.
As said by some people prior, the system may not always fully operate then all of suddenly work. The piston that quickly pushes the block to be transformed sometimes does not move. The way I get around it and its worked every time is I tie the redstone torch to both the pistons found below. I then repeatedly place a redstone torch ontop of the block to be transformed, it does change it but the pistons move heaps and the torch breaks. Do this, then rebuild the circuit as shown by the pictures/video, place the torch on the block and break it. Should work then. Have no idea why this fixes it though :tongue.gif:
Amazing though Sapone this is such a good find great job mate. I've given you credit in the description of the video :smile.gif:
The water current doesn't need to come from a different direction for the higher wool colors though. Any direction is fine as long as it falls from any distance higher up.
Also, in creative mode it's easy to duplicate infinite supplies of seamless doubleslab once the machine makes a single block. Just detonate it with TNT to have it drop as a collectible item. You can then pick up the seamless slab and place an infinite number of them wherever you want. If you ever lose the slab in your inventory you can then detonate any of the other ones you've placed to collect a new seamless slab without transmuting another one. I think it's going to be revolutionary for builders to have a completely new stone block to decorate with.
Oh, and Spanone, the reference chart is missing a couple other things you can transmute. It only includes the building components people are most likely to want to make a lot of with the machine.
I left out changing stair orientation, and using that to make invisible intangible blocks. And a bunch of other things like cauldron water level, piston orientation, silverfish block appearance, etc. that are neat, but not something you probably need to deal with too often.
How do I obtain the second line of wool, do I need another water channel on the top?
The lower line of wool is created by water flowing directly sideways into the torch. The upper row of wool is caused by water flowing sideways into a space above the torch, then falling straight down onto it. So yeah, it makes sense to build two water channels.
EDIT: Oh, and light gray wool is created if you pour water on it directly from above, without it flowing sideways at all. So it might make sense to have a machine that can spill water 3 ways; from the side, from the side and above, and from directly above.
I think I figured out why the torch is required (relegating this to a semi-automatic device).
The torch's data value is over-writing the wool block's for that brief moment. Air has no data values, and thus isn't conflicting, but the torch does have a data value.

Hmm, I wonder if there's a way to grant damage value 16. So far the machine can only do 1-15. I only ask because there's an unused wool block with damage value 16, which according to the wiki currently has the texture of netherwart:
As of 1.9 pre-release 1, the purple error block now looks like the first stage of growing Nether Wart. This is due to the pink block that it used being replaced with the texture for Nether Wart.
It also says that it turns to white wool when placed, but I wonder if that would still happen here.
The possibility to get mossy/ccracked stone bricks infinite in vanilla is awesome!
Don't forget the seamless doubleslab. This gives us an entirely new attractive stone block to play with, that previously wasn't even available in creative mode without hacks.

How do you break a block in creative without it being utterly destroyed?

TNT
Anyway, is there any way of making this automated by not having to put the torch on the block? Can you put the torch somewhere else? This would revolutionise Minecraft.

Blow it up with TNT. It'll drop a collectible slab (which will look like a regular stone slab but isn't). Once one is in your inventory in creative you can place it endlessly without letting go of it.
So essentially, in creative you should use this machine one time to get a single seamless doubleslab, place a whole bunch of them somewhere that you can blow up in the future should you need to replace the one in your inventory, and then you permanently have access to a block not available in your item menu.
As far as I know, this is the only practical device ever built in creative mode. And by practical I mean "something that makes building in creative mode easier/better". You can build a lot of cool things in creative mode, but this is the only thing that improves creative mode itself.
I would argue that the invisible stairs are the greatest benefit. It's not just a cosmetic change, it is a mechanic that is otherwise unobtainable - completely transparent and immaterial block, which can however be pushed by pistons and push other blocks behind it. This allows elevators or conveyor belts based on a piston tape design, without having to use one or multiple pistons for every block moved.
True, those are also awesome. It lets you do the same thing open fence gates can do, but without being able to see it.
I've made a few tests to see if we can make it automatic. Therefore i used a design which works based on BUDs, so i't can react on unpowerd blocks, too.
Results so far:
-Redstone Torch (powered): Yes (not new)
-Redstone Torch (unpowered): No
-Redstone Dust (unpowered, wasn't able to test powered): Yes
-Redstone Repeater (different orientations/settings): No
-Lever (powered): Yes
-Lever (unpowered): No
-Button (powered): Yes
-Button (unpowered): No
-Wooden Pressure Plate (unpowered, wasn't able to test powered): No
-Stone Pressure Plate (unpowered, wasn't able to test powered): No
-Rail: No
-Powered Rail (powered and unpowered): No
-Detector Rail (powering and not powering): No
-Fire: No
-Torch: No
I think that the original redstone (Lever, Button, Torch, Dust...) have a unique code (maybe something from their beginning) that's blocking the normal updateroutine in some way, if they break by semselfs (maybe water/lava don't destroy blocks, but just call the "destroyroutine" of the block they break). If a piston pushes a block into another one the pistoncode is in control (and therefore the RS can't run their own code).
But thats just an idea.
it's something to the effect that destroying the component calls an update even if it's not supposed to.
same principle behind the redstone dust to obsidian trick.
One strange result I'm getting is that the redstone torch is not dropping as an item.
I build the machine (with a setup for brown wool), place the torch, put the water current, it flows and breaks the torch, converting the wool to brown, but the torch does not appear as an item. When I just normally use water to break a torch, it does drop as an item, so I don't know what the problem is with this. Anyone?
This is weird: I did a bit more testing, and it seems that the torch will drop as an item only for first-row damage values. If I use it with falling water (like I need for brown wool), I lose the torch.

There's a glitch where water falling on items deletes them, while water flowing sideways into items simply breaks them. I don't think it's anything particular to this machine.
That's a shame though, since it means certain colors of wool cost 1 redstone dust apiece to create. So that free brown wool isn't really free after all.
Also to my chagrin I realized that when you refill a cauldron in the nether, the lava also consumed the torch. So "free water in the nether" isn't free and isn't self sufficient once placed. It required redstone ore as fuel to refill the cauldron.
I think the most profitable wools are then light blue and magenta, since these normally require lapis lazuli, but are first row and so do not destroy the torch. Anyway, brown wool can sometimes be found as a sheep default, so it's not super rare.

Edit: Here's the video anyway.
This is really a "break through" in redstone..
Too bad it's more likely to get fixed.

And how do you get a block of ice (vanilla survival), pray tell?
Oh, wait, you can't. Never mind.
It also says that it turns to white wool when placed, but I wonder if that would still happen here.
