I use a few iron doors as they keep villagers and mobs in their place. But buttons are a bit too short to get through a door reliably. However, most pulse extenders that I know take up a lot of space and can't really be hidden close to a door (beneath, above, whatever).
Is there a nice, ultra compact pulse extender that can be used to power a door where I have buttons above or beside the door?
Redstone comparators are bulky? Because you could just used a few pieces of redstone dust, a block and 2 comparators
The problem is to integrate them into the wall. If you build more than 3 blocks high then the extender doesn't go on the roof, it can't be on the bottom of the doors because the initial signal can't be transported down easily, and if I put it on the side then I'll have a gap in my wall due to the comparators.
