Build your 5x5 surface a few blocks higher if they are killed by the second fall, But if the water falls also, they will most probably be landing in water and suffer no more damage. The flush will obviously drop water into the hole also and it will drain away as the flush stops.
I'm confused. The way it is set up now is so they will die when they land. I want to change that so they will be a one hit kill. Only issue is, the drop area is 5x5 which means I couldn't reach every mob or their exp.
Spiders. If you have a high rate mob farm then spiders will often clog up the drop area. SO you need a 5x5 or 3x3 area in order to prevent this. I am going to try to out right just remove spiders from my mob farm at this point.
I've used a 2x2 drop hole falling through a 4x4 pipe to a 4x4 impact zone. All of it can be reached from a 1/2 block high slot along one side. On occasion a spider survives to get to the side and then come down with more life left, but they don't block the pipe and other mobs still fall.
Because this forum limits how many images you can post, I posted this on Reddit.

I am wondering how I can funnel a 5x5 drop area of mobs into a 1x1 area but they still take fall damage?
Water streams wouldn't work because they don' take fall damage
Slime slime machines don't work because If they land on the slime they don't take fall damage. They also will suffocate slime machine.
Can't change the drop area to a 1x1 area because of spiders that will block everything.
How about setting up a flush on the 5x5 area dropping them into a 1x1, Let some fall then flush , turn off water and kill them.

I need them to be a 1 hit kill because I need it as a EXP farm. If any fall while I am flushing then they aren't a one hit kill.
I can't do a 1x1 because spiders would clog the hole.

Won't the mobs move towards you on their own?
And you can put hoppers in the middle 9 blocks of the floor to pick up any drops you can't reach.
Or build it so you can attack the mobs from att 4 sides.

Or have a button operated flush system for when you can't reach everything.

If you build your access like this <See pic:> you can hit mobs standing against the back wall and the experience orbs seem to make it to the front.
Just testing.
why not funnel them *before* they drop?

Well you couldn't fit spiders in a 1x1 drop hole anyway, so you could always filter them out first.
