For example, for a specific map, I make a creeper face. I keep its face, including the mouth part, as green wool.
Now i want that if i press a specific button, black wool pops up where the creeper's eyes and mouth are located.
IK that it could be done by command blocks but can I do this using only pistons?
Any help would be appreciated!
Have a look at these miniature versions I made, they handle only 1 block but it should give you some ideas on how to make a large scale model.

the second one can swap back to the original state but it's way too big and bulky, maybe you could use double piston extenders to push the blocks in front of the pistons for deployment.
Good luck.
