I made a comment on another thread that hasn't been used in years apparently. So I figured I'd make my own thread just in case my comment wasn't seen!
Hey, so I've started wanting to get into red-stone mechanics. And the first thing I wanna do is build a retractable staircase that starts off already open. I have a farm built under my house and I've given myself very little space for reason being, I like small homes. I've always been a studio apartment type of person. So I have a single space stairway that goes down 4 block heights. (The top stair can be ignored as it's surrounded by 2 walls and a door) http://prntscr.com/itg6k2
I took a screenshot of the stairway in question, I'm willing to move things if need be to make this work. But you see I have a small trash chute behind the stairway that allows me to drop trash into the water that doubles as a source of infinite water AND a farm spot in the corner all in one. So I walk around to that spot to get my newly grown crops, throw away what I Don't need, maybe get a bucket of water if needed, then turn around and BAM I'm met with a thing of stairs. Granted I have the border around the sides of the farm to walk on but you know how the game works, you jump too much near a crop and the crops a gonner. It's extremely frustrating. So I'd like to build a retractable staircase using my current setup where I step on a wooden pressure plate or press a simple button, that temporarily pulls the stairs down to give me a path back to the base of the stairs, they then go back up, and I can go about my day.
I honestly don't know if this can be done given the amount of space I have given myself already. But I'd like to at least give it a try. Please? Could you help me out?
I'd also like to do something similar but in the reverse for a second staircase leading to space under the farm for storage and where the trashcan I built is set (i do the old cactus trashcan since it takes up the least space and is the simplest trash can out there to make) http://prntscr.com/itga9o (Top of the second staircase it's an L shape but I only really need the beginning of the stairs to be retractable not the bottom half) http://prntscr.com/itgah8 (room below the farm empty for now with only the glass chute to the trash can and the bottom part of the stairs)
I'm not gonna say I'm a pro at Minecraft in the least because obviously, i'm not. I'm just trying to have some fun with the game and stuff right now. But I'd very much like help please? :3
What version of Minecraft, and what mods are you using in this pack?
If RFTools is in this pack, and assuming you have enough power infrastructure to support the concept, you could set yourself up a space chamber (I think that's the device you need for this) that swaps the stairs in and out without any moving parts cluttering things up.
If you are playing on 1.7.10, there's a mod (which I currently forget the name of) that adds a drawbridge block. If you are okay with a filled-in stair where each step is on a pillar of other blocks, you could set up a row of these drawbridges to push and pull the stairs up and down.
Another nifty mod option would be the Funky Locomotion mod. The whole point of this mod is to move around blocks using a mechanized scaffolding system (frames), allowing you to build moving platforms, move entire houses and other (small) buildings, and make fancy elevators. There are a few very wacky interaction quirks with certain technical blocks/entities, but otherwise the mod attempts to be fully compatible with everything.
Oh well, it's on the most current version of Minecraft stable forge 1.12.2. as for the mods hmmm I'm using quite a few tho I'd rather stick to the basics for now when it comes to redstone since I've barely ever used it. I've used it to create a simple light system before but that's about it and it took me a while to sort out all of the stuff within that and believe me, it was far easier after looking at it than it was when I first started trying it. Tho with this I have no clue where to begin because of the simple fact that most retracting stairs I've seen are usually 2 - 4 blocks wide for the stairs alone ignoring the rest of the inner workings of the mechanism to make them go up and down. So yeah I want to ignore the mods I have installed for the sake of simplicity for this first time around.
You'd be better off asking in the Redstone section ... most of the retractable staircases i've seen retract into a side wall, so you would need a side wall along one edge of the staircase in the areas you want to retract, probably at least 3 blocks deep to hide the stair/piston and a facing block on the outside to hide the redstone. Redstone typically takes up more space than you imagine.

Oh also on a side note! Just out of curiosity, is there a mod that prevents farmland trample? The nature of my house makes it so that my character jumps a bit while on the farm under the house. I know "why don't you just make the farm flat" well because i want it to look nice too. I have the stairs set up but sometimes it doesn't quite do it and i end up damaging my farm regardless

Random Things has an item called "Fertilized Dirt." It is dirt that automatically applies Bone Meal to your plants and they grow faster. They don't need to be near water, AND anything planted on it does not ever get trampled. It's a great item. From what I saw on Curse Forum, it is available for 1.12, so it would be your best bet.

not looking for a cheat mod that magically makes my crops grow faster and stuff. I'm looking for a mod that makes crops safe from me damaging them when jumping on them. Simple as that. But thanks for the offer.
So UPDATE! I figure it out how to make my retractable staircase! Thanks for the tip on looking up Mumbo Jumbo, they didn't have the guide i was looking for BUT it did lead me to a youtuber who DID have a staircase I could use given my personal limitations! So thanks for the help!
as for the other thing, the farmland trampling issue. Any tips on that one still? :/ I don't wanna keep having to sneak around my farm to make sure it's safe just to avoid doing damage to it

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.
Two block high ceiling over the farmland = no trampling.
sigh....did you even read my original post??? I built my farm the way it is on purpose. I like small homes but i don't want it to look boring so i made it look nice. but the drops in height even with stairs connecting them to allow smoother moving through the farm causes issues when my character auto jumps.
