A youtuber called Mumbo Jumbo has multiple videos on storage solutions. If you look around, I'm sure you can find his video where he mentions sorting systems.
ok. I looked at all 24 posts by mumbo jumbo....I am old so have to say I might have missed some. I did not find any step by st ep tutorial for auto storage sort machine. I see lots, or at least some, videos on it but being old makes it very hard for me to follow. I am good, sorta, at following step by step tutorial list on making stuff. If someone could provide a tutorial like this for me I would be grateful. I realize that this is asking a lot so won't be too surprised if no one will do it.
Here, this is the sorting system I use. It's so simple I feel like I don't need to explain how to build it - it's 1 block wide, so you can see everything on the screenshot. The only thing of note is that the upper hopper should be facing the comparator (just as shown), while the direction of the lower hopper doesn't matter.
The input should be located on top of the upper hopper. It can be a simple input chest, a hopper line, or a water stream. Hopper line is more expensive, but it works the best.
The output is wherever the lower hopper is pointing to (it's a chest on the screenshot). It can be an output chest, a hopper line, a mass storage system, an item incinerator (if you want to get rid of certain trash items), etc.
The system is well suited to handle the drops from automatic farms, as those tend to deliver small quantities of stackable items every now and then. Hoever, it can be useful for regular storage.
Pros:
Cheap. Just 2 hoppers, 1 repeater, 1 comparator, 1 redstone torch and 3 redstone per unit.
Tileable. You can place units side by side, without intervals. You might have to alternate regualr and trapped chests as outputs, since you can't place three regular chests in a row.
Compact. 1 wide, 3(4 if you count the floor) blocks tall, 5 long (not counting the chest).
Silent. No pistons or droppers.
Overflow resistant. If your chest fills up, the unit won't break, nor will it break adjacent units.
Easy to expand. Just add more units next to existing ones.
Receiving chests can be empty.
Cons:
It can only sort one item per storage unit. Two if you have two adjacent units outputting into a double chest.
It's only expandable horisontally. For example, you can't make a wall full of shulker boxes using this design.
Sometimes an item can get stuck in the lower hopper. It will leave when another item arrives, but the system is not 100% lossless.
If you use water stream as input, and you items arrive in large quantities, the system might not be able to pick up all of those immediately, resulting in loss of items.
Regarding filter configuration: this design requires some filler items in the last four slots. It should be an item that will NEVER enter this sorting system. The easiest way to achieve that is to rename a bunch of sticks with an anvil, since renamed items don't stack with the same unrenamed ones. You can see it on my second screenshot, I renamed the sticks to "#Filler item". The first slot must be the item you want to filter.
If you want this system to filter something that stacks differently (like eggs or enderpearls, which stack to 16), you will need to find the correct amount of items.
If the storage is full and the unit overflows, then items will simply pass by to the next units that accept them (if any). At the end of the item trasport line you might want to have either a chest for unsorted items (useful for storage sorters), or an incinerator for excess items (useful for farms).
thx to last two posters. I am still trying to build mumbo jumbo's build. I have gotten to the part where he puts 6 chests on top of each other. then he puts another 6 chests next to t hem. I can not seem to get the second set of 6 chests. whenever I click on side of the bottom first chest to start second stack it will not accept t he new chest. what am I doing wrong?
ah!! well guess I need to look up trapped chest. may wait to see if above post will still put together a step by step so I don't have to try to follow video. at my age videos are not easy. anyway thx.
any one have a tutorial/guide for building the above redstone mechanism? old guy who needs good/clear instructions. using 1.12.

To put chests next to each other WITHOUT joining to each other you have to alternate between 'normal' chests & 'trapped' chests

TangoTek has a sorting system that allows you to sort your chests however you want. You can easily have all sorts of items in a chest.
The tutorial is pretty easy to follow.
