Hi! I was wondering if there is any way, using tellraw or say commands, to have the player create a variable in a scoreboard that is a word? Essentially, my idea is to make an Earthbound-esque character name selection, but with limited choices, obviously. Then, what if I want to refer to the player as their chosen name later. Can I refer to this variable that I created beforehand.

The point - /say a result of a calculation, or some other process.
You can /setblock a commandblock with a command in it, however, you can't edit a commandblock without knowing its NBT data exactly. - so you would have to have a /say commandblock for every POSSIBLE letter arrangement...
That's what's not possible:
Idk a command, but if there is a NAME written somewhere in it, replace it by PIIPECEK.
Then, when you want to refer to the player as their character name based on what they chose, just run all three at once, and it will only say the name of the one that they chose. Hope this helped! If you don't want to do it this way I could try to make a different way for you.

Thanks for the idea, but I've basically given up on that concept! Maybe I'll try it, but it doesn't seem like it's worth all the trouble when I could simply refer to you as your In-Game Name.

If you don't get what I'm talking about, use this as an example: https://jsfiddle.net/c8o1kevr/
I'm pretty sure scoreboards can only store numbers as data, but I was just curious to see if there is a way to do something like this!

Too bad, that'd be amazing.
Oh well, it was worth a shot, I guess!
you can use scoreboards to do this. You could create a scoreboard:
Then, have execute commands for each choice:

Yea.
