1. Open a Terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T)
2. Type in: sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-java
3. Type in your password
4. Wait for it to download and install
5. Download the launcher .jar here https://minecraft.net/download
No matter which method you use, you need to do this:
6. Put the .jar in the /desktop folder
7. Right click the .jar and click ´properties´.
8. Click the ´permissions´ tab
9. Tick the box to allow the file to be executed
10. Run the .jar as Java/OpenJDK , not as an archive. You can do this by right clicking it, hovering the cursor over ´Open With´ and select Java/OpenJDK.
Optional: You can make OpenJDK default for opening .jar files instead of having to do #10 every time.
11. Open another Terminal window, and type: sudo gedit.
12. A password prompt may open up; type in your password
13. Hit Ctrl+O.
14. Click on ´File System´ on the left side.
15. Click on the folder ´usr´. Then do the same for ´share´ and ´applications´. Then click on a file named ´defaults.list´.
16. Hit Ctrl+F. Type into the box that popped up ´java´.
17. You should find these two lines under each other:
application/x-jar=file-roller.desktop
application/x-java-archive=file-roller.desktop
18. Replace file-roller.desktop in each one with openjdk-7-java.desktop
Mine is a lot longer since it´s more in depth and assumes you are new to Linux rather than giving you two links and basically saying, ¨figure it out.¨
Source: I´m running Ubuntu 13.10 right now.
