Sometimes I wonder about this community. It's so hypocritical. You guys have been begging Mojang to make the oceans smaller, and when they finally do, you complain and want them to bring it back to normal. What's next? When the Mod API comes out, people are going to complain and want that gone, too?
That is because Minecraft's community operates in a way a lot of people fail to notice. The most vocal players about features are those who dislike them. So the most vocal people about the size old oceans were those who hated the size, and those who like the size were content and therefore quiet. Now that they have changes the oceans, those who were previously complaining about ocean size are content and therefore quiet, and those who liked the size and were previously content are now complaining. It is a vicious cycle that just proves that you can't please everybody.
I have already addressed this in this thread as to why the community seems hypocritical.

I don't think survival mode is dying but I do think the mining feature is dying now.
Ever since Jeb take over Minecraft development all they add is combat and adventuring feature. They didn't add many thing related to mining.I know they added emerald ore and nether quartz but they seems focused on combat more than mining. They really need refocus on mining feature instead of turning Minecraft into PvP focused and adventuring game.

So trading with villagers and making light detectors is pvp-related?

Nope, but Jeb is keep adding feature that is not related to mining in most of update. They keep adding stuff which is not related to mining.I like him make Minecraft more harder to survive but they seems forgot Minecraft's mining feature.I hope they can refocus back mining feature...

Name 1 combat-oriented update that happened this year. Just 1.
Easy. Run. Just keep running till you are out of the tundra, then kill some sheep and make a bed and sleep there.
We are in a generation of minecraft where people don't seem to want to run thousands of blocks from their spawn point.
Tundras were large even before 1.7.2. They're meant to be large.

Ironic, as the older MC generations wanted to see newer and cooler things when traveling thousands blocks.
Yes but if you haven't noticed, before you saw nothing BUT complaints. Now you see complaints AND people who like it. Notice the difference?
That is because the change was just made, and so the people who were previously the more vocal group were still on the forums when it was made, and therefore when the complaints started coming they started defending the features.

It's a bit more interesting than water, water, sky, water, water, maybe a one-block island, water, water, RAGE, water, water, RAGE, while doing nothing but press the 'w' key or whatever you've set your forward key too. Instead on land you get, survival, dealing with mobs, base building, crafting, reasorce gathering, while seeing some different land structures. So, yes, a bit better.
Thats what i said in other posts, they could make things better maybe resizing the ocean but not as radically as they did and balancing with some islands taking advantage of the new rare biomes and not just to make little splotches of land. Sometimes you can see a 1x1 block island... (with the new generation too).
In my humble opinion they didnt solve the problem, they kicked it aside. When you repeat something, even if its something with more content, its starts losing sense... all you see is green, dirt, stone, some snow over and over and over. Whats the difference with big vast ocean? One of the differences i see is that at least oceans gives me some "breathing" area.. but if they aded content to oceans and kept the size, it would be the same nothingness...
To wrap it up: balance, this game needs balance. They kept adding things, nerfed things etc (and believe me, i really apreciate it) but looks like they keep making the game less balanced. A great example is when they added the zombie detection radius... it was Crazy! but at least now it has some balance... i believe that thats the way things should go... im not saying this as an absolute reality, or a divine truth, its my humble opinion as a player and its my desire as a customer, a customer who bought something and overall i want what in my opinon is the best for the game and the best for everybody.

When oceans were put in there were a lot of complements. After a while, people stopped complementing, because it was "normal", but there were still a lot of posts talking about ocean exploration, generation of isolated continents for multiplayer, mapping out continents, etc. - things which are possible only with the true oceans which are now gone.
1.6 oceans were very functional and a lot like real life (the Earth is also about 70% water, with enormous continents you never need to leave.) A good feature that resembles real life is "background" - if it's there you just expect it and don't think about it.
You don't see people complement the existence of trees either, but if Mojang took trees out and just had boxes for wood people would scream.

Geographicraft (formerly Climate Control) - Control climate, ocean, and land sizes; stop chunk walls; put modded biomes into Default worlds, and more!
RTG plus - All the beautiful terrain of RTG, plus varied and beautiful trees and forests.
You can't get of an island? Go to nether, go 100-1000 blocks away, make a portal, come out, you'll be somewhere else.
Its not just like that.... with the current ocean size finding a fair-sized island on an ocean is like looking for a needle in haystack =/. Because of the current ocean size (lake size) you wont get islands much bigger than few blocks, maybe youll get a big one if you are lucky.
People were complain about too much water/oceans.
Mojang fixes that.
People now want more water....
No.
A LOT of people complained about the oceans being too frequent and too large.
Now a very SMALL number of people are complaining about it.
You can't make everyone happy. While I do think they scaled the water back a little too far, I prefer how it is now over how it used to be.
Honestly a better solution would be to introduce options in world generation where players can adjust the ratio of different biomes with a slider. At the very least, a land vs. water slider... but a hot vs. cold one wouldn't hurt either.
I thought it started sucking since 1.3.2 because they changed the attack range of the player then and now it is impossible to kill the ender dragon without armor or arrows. Before I was able to kill it with a sword, and only enough arrows to take out his towers.

True. You can please some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but never all the people all of the time.
When I made a new world I spawned in a horrible biome for houses and I had to DELETE my world to find a new biome. URRRGRGRGHHHGHHG

I've been away from the game about 6 months, came back and was STUNNED that the roses were removed along with Herobrine.
I want them BOTH back, Mojang! This is a game-breaker!

I'm just a Minecraft player that likes to give my opinion. Nothing special to see here.
